There is good news for the cultural landscape in Melsungen! The Old Casino, a listed building from 1838, is finally receiving the necessary financial support for a comprehensive renovation. According to the Hessian/Lower Saxony General The project started a year ago, but had to pause due to outstanding funding notices. Mayor Timo Riedemann is optimistic that work can continue in 2026.
The commitment for funding of 3.4 million euros comes from former Federal Minister Claudia Roth and is part of a broad program to revitalize cultural monuments. Riedemann is grateful for the support and emphasizes that Melsungen remains on the list of funded projects - even if the current federal government under Wolfram Weimer has not yet made any clear statements about ongoing projects.
Planned measures and support
As part of the renovation, the Old Casino will not only be dismantled, but also modernized in order to accommodate future cultural events. This renovation work is part of a broader special monument protection program launched by the Minister of State for Culture. The aim is to promote both the preservation of buildings and the renovation of organs nationwide.
The city of Melsungen has the opportunity to apply for project funds through the responsible state offices. This means that up to 50 percent of the costs are available for federal funding, but additional funds from other providers are also required. Riedemann hopes that with a successful application, structural progress will soon become a reality.
Sustainable cultural support and future prospects
The renovation of the old casino is not only important for Melsungen, but also shows the efforts to protect and preserve cultural identity. There are numerous similar projects throughout Germany that are supported by the special monument protection program. From 2026 onwards, further funds from the cultural buildings offensive are to be used so that such cultural treasures are not forgotten.
The revitalized Old Casino is scheduled to open in 2028 and could become an important cultural meeting point for the region. Despite the delays so far, Mayor Riedemann and city officials are confident that Melsungen will soon be back in the cultural spotlight.
