Join us! Kassel district is planning a new cycling network for everyone

The Kassel district is tackling the issue: a cycling network suitable for everyday use is being set up here, which is intended to delight both commuters and leisure cyclists. After a comprehensive inspection and a vulnerability analysis that uncovered important deficiencies, citizen participation was launched in July. Christoph Hüther, the district's cycling representative, leaves no doubt about how important the citizens' perspective and specialist knowledge are. Without them we can't move on, that's clear.

An online participation program lasting several weeks is currently underway in this context. Citizens can get creative here: They can enter information on various topics on an interactive map. From missing markings and potholes to dangerous crossings and dirty signage - the list of possible improvements is long. Requests for new cycle path routes are also very welcome. There is also a brainstorming module for general infrastructure tips and of course for words of praise.

Together into the future of cycling

The feedback couldn't be more varied. For example, citizens express a desire for advertising for bicycle-friendly employers or call for an expansion of city cycling. Improving bike & ride options is also high on the wish list. Those interested can find detailed instructions on how to participate as well as an FAQ section for open questions on the project website.

This citizen participation is only the first step. An inventory of the cycling network in the Kassel district was carried out in advance in order to develop a seamless, safe and sustainable cycling network. The focus is particularly on connections to schools, train stations and commercial and administrative locations.

A look beyond the borders

The expansion of the cycling network in Berlin is perceived by citizens as inadequate and ineffective, leading to protests and demands for faster implementation. The challenges of urban transport are becoming more than clear not only in Hesse, but also in the capital.

However, with the cooperation of citizens, institutions and a clear vision, the Kassel district would like to take the first step towards an active cycling future. It remains exciting to see how the plans will develop – for cyclists throughout the district.
