Discover the magic of Niederzwehren: guided tour through the fairytale town!
On June 14, 2025, interested visitors will have a special opportunity to discover the cultural treasures of Kassel-Niederzwehren. The local board of trustees has invited people to take a tour of the historic village center, which will shed light on many facets of the region's history and fairy tale tradition. The tour is led by the committed Erika Knauf and starts at the AWO senior center in Niederzwehren, on Frankfurter Straße, not far from the defense tower.
Niederzwehren can look back on a long and eventful history that dates back to 1074, when the place was first mentioned in documents as “Tweron”. This charming village has overcome many challenges over the centuries, including destruction in 1402 and during the Thirty Years' War. Despite these setbacks, numerous historical buildings have been preserved, including the impressive defensive tower from 1472 and a number of lovingly restored half-timbered houses.
Part of the fairytale street
What many people don't know: The old village center of Niederzwehren is part of the German Fairy Tale Route, one of the oldest holiday routes in Germany. This route stretches over 600 kilometers from Hanau to Buxtehude and connects 60 places associated with the famous fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. Highlights include the Brothers Grimm town of Hanau, the historic town of Hameln and Sababurg Castle, which is considered the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty Castle.
Particularly noteworthy is the home of Dorothea Viehmann, a famous storyteller whose stories made a significant contribution to the Brothers Grimm collection. Anyone interested in fairy tales and stories will find a wealth of museums, castles and historic towns along the Fairy Tale Route that keep the tradition alive.
Admission free, donations welcome
Participation in the guided tour through Niederzwehren is free of charge, but donations to the German Foundation for Monument Protection are welcome. This is not only a great way to learn more about the region's exciting history, but also another step towards preserving the cultural heritage that so many people hold dear.
The German Fairy Tale Route also offers wonderful natural landscapes such as the Weserbergland and the Spessart, which are a delight not only for fairy tale lovers, but also for nature lovers. The combination of breathtaking landscapes, historic cities and fairytale stories makes this part of Germany a very special experience.
For anyone who has always wanted to get to know the lives of the Brothers Grimm, this tour provides an exciting insight - because the Grimms' fairy tales are not just stories, but an inseparable part of Hessian identity.
