Kassel leads Happiness Atlas 2025: Why the city is blooming!

What's going on in Hesse? Current news shows that life satisfaction in Germany is being researched again and again. The Happiness Atlas 2025 reveals that Hamburg and Bavaria are the happiest federal states. In comparison, Hesse occupies a slightly lower position with a tenth place out of a total of sixteen. Nevertheless, there is good news in Hesse: Kassel is named the happiest big city in Germany and has achieved an impressive satisfaction score of 7.44 points.

An interesting figure is that only 3% of the population in Kassel is dissatisfied. In contrast to this are the values in Frankfurt, where 41.2% of citizens are highly satisfied, while in Wiesbaden 38.4% report satisfaction. This sheds light on the social conditions within the cities and shows where happiness can be found. In comparison, life satisfaction in Hesse is in a solid ninth place with 7.01 points.

Kassel at the top

In the city rankings, Kassel is followed by Krefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia and Düsseldorf, both of which are in second and third place. These numbers show that smaller cities often offer a higher level of happiness than large metropolises. A look at the top five happiest cities shows:

rank City Points
1 Kassel, Hesse 7.44
2 Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia
3 Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia
4 Augsburg, Bavaria
5 Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia

Kassel's culture and beautiful sights, such as the Wilhelmshöhe mountain park and the Grimm World, certainly contribute to this positive image.

Winter mood and Christmas preparations

In addition to happiness and satisfaction, winter inevitably brings with it a lot of preparation. The first snow fell in the Rhön and Upland on Sunday night and enveloped the landscape in a wintry atmosphere. A 31 meter high Nordmann fir made from Schöllkrippen, which will be erected until the Christmas market in Frankfurt, is named “Frau Holle” – a pleasing sight for all Christmas market visitors.

However, prices for Christmas products are rising, which is causing concern for many consumers. The rising costs are due to manufacturers' price developments and also directly affect the Christmas season.

Students in a dilemma

Ultimately, it is to be hoped that concerns about rising prices due to bird flu in Germany do not have an impact on consumers. In these tense times, positive thinking is still required.
