Hesse honors veterans: Flags for our heroes on National Day!
What's going on in Hesse? Today, June 14, 2025, the state is preparing for a special occasion: National Veterans Day. On Sunday, June 15th, Hesse will fly flags to all state service buildings to pay deserved recognition to the active and former soldiers of the Bundeswehr. This was ordered by Homeland Security Minister Roman Poseck (CDU), who underlines the great responsibility and importance of the Bundeswehr in the current security situation. The voluntary nature of many men and women who served in the Homeland Security Regiment is also noted.
Germany's security has faced major challenges in recent years. Poseck addresses relevant topics such as the Ukraine conflict and the situation in the Middle East, which emphasize the importance of the Bundeswehr as a guarantor of national security. He also emphasizes that the state's security promises are particularly important in uncertain times.
A weekend of honors and events
The first National Veterans Day on June 15 will be accompanied by a variety of events celebrating the veteran community. According to veteranentag.gov.de, this includes around ten million people who served in the ranks of the Bundeswehr or who left service honorably. On the main day, a large combined event with field service, musical performances and networking events will take place in Augustdorf.
But that's just the beginning: There will also be impressive events in various cities such as Euskirchen and Duisburg. The photo exhibition “Faces of Life” will open in Euskirchen on June 17th, honoring veterans. In addition, a “March of Appreciation” is being organized in Duisburg, which is all about respect and recognition. The events from the region show that Veterans Day is not just a one-off event, but represents a nationwide movement.
A look at the traditions
Veterans Day is also an opportunity to reflect on Germany's traditional history and cultural roots. German culture is strongly influenced by its history and is manifested in many aspects such as language, art and architecture. The Bundeswehr and the veterans contribute a significant part to this legacy. This shows that values such as loyalty and honor are still held high and shape our view of the future.
In this special time when society is coming together, it is to be hoped that the honors this weekend are not only dedicated to the soldiers, but also send a strong signal for peace. It must be clear: appreciation and respect are the ingredients that make a community strong.
So be there when the flags fly in Hesse and all over Germany on Sunday and the merits of the veterans are highlighted. Cheers to our commitment to peace and freedom!
