The Werra-Meißner district is currently blooming in the most magnificent colors: the poppies have begun to bloom and are already attracting thousands of hikers. The impressive fields around the villages of Germerode and Grandenborn shine with millions of pink and purple flowers. This natural splendor not only attracts photographers, but also tourists who are enchanted by the beauty of the region. A real highlight are the two to three and a half kilometer long poppy hiking trails, which were created especially for walkers. Tradition and harvest time

This tradition is highlighted by the continued popularity of poppies in the region. The planned harvest, which is scheduled to take place from mid-August after the hiking trails have been dismantled, is expected to yield between 500 and 1,000 kilograms of poppy seeds per hectare. About 10% of the harvest is processed into oil, the rest is used in the kitchen, for baked goods, ice cream and even soap.
Anyone who wants to visit the poppy fields can look forward to a real explosion of color. In Germerode, two poppy varieties are already in full bloom, while the fields in Grandenborn will not reveal their splendor until June 20th.
