650 new commissioner candidates sworn in: Hessentag celebrates the police!
On June 15, 2025, an impressive ceremony took place in Bad Vilbel as part of the Hessentag. Around 650 commissioner candidates were sworn in on this special “Police Day”. The celebrations were led by Hesse's Prime Minister Boris Rhein and Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU), who emphasized to the young police officers their responsibility in the service.
In their speeches, the politicians emphasized the importance of the oath of service that the candidates took to the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Constitution of the State of Hesse. “With this step, you are committed to the basic values of our democracy,” emphasized Prime Minister Rhein, while Interior Minister Poseck acknowledged the challenges that the police service brings with it, especially in stressful situations. This ceremony is an important milestone on the way to a responsible professional career.
Training and career opportunities
The new commissioner candidates have already come a long way. For about a year they have been studying at the Hessian University of Public Management and Security for a dual course of study, which usually lasts three years. After successful completion, they are officially appointed as probationary civil servants. This is the first step in a promising career in the police, which, depending on your career goals, can develop in either the middle or higher police service.
As the information on Wikipedia shows, police training in Germany varies depending on the desired rank. For the middle service, the intermediate school leaving certificate is usually sufficient, while the technical college entrance qualification is required for the higher service. Anyone who takes this route must also have German or EU citizenship and must not have any previous convictions. But physical requirements also play a role: women should be at least 160 centimeters tall and men 165 centimeters tall.
The challenges of police work
The training includes various selection procedures, which include both written aptitude tests and sporting tests. An interview, group discussions and physical examinations are also part of the process. The aim of these selection measures is to attract the best personnel for the challenges of the police service.
Senior service graduates often have another option: they can complete a two-year course of study at the German Police University to deepen their knowledge. The training is strongly based on the specific laws and guidelines of the federal states, which means unique training conditions for each region.
The swearing in of the new commissioner candidates at the Hessentag is therefore not only a symbolic act, but also an important step towards a responsibility that protects the basic values of our society. The future civil servants enter their new phase of life with great expectations and a strong commitment to democracy.
