Fiber optic expansion in Karben: Progress and millions in investments!

In Karben, the expansion of the fiber optic network is making rapid progress. On September 25, 2025, a CDU delegation visited the so-called “Point of Presence” (POP) of the Karbener project in Okarben. The aim of the visit was to check the current progress in fiber optic expansion. Construction began on this promising project in mid-2023, and the first successes can be seen: the districts of Okarben, Burg-Gräfenrode, Petterweil and Kloppenheim are already digitally networked.

Activations are currently underway in Groß-Karben, while expansion is still being pushed forward in Klein-Karben. Another important step is imminent: the expansion in the Rendel district is expected to begin in 2025 and be completed by the first half of 2026. Over 40 percent of Karben's population have already decided on a fiber optic connection, which proves that this offer is very popular.

Investments and collaborations

The city of Karben is investing an impressive two million euros in this project, not only for the digital infrastructure, but also for the renewal of the sidewalks. Together with partners, Yplay Germany has invested considerable funds in Karben - we are talking about a significant double-digit million amount. These investments are important not only for the city, but also for neighboring communities, as expansion is being pushed forward in areas that cannot be developed privately.

The foundation for the fiber optic expansion was laid in December 2021 when the city council unanimously decided on the expansion. On this day, a declaration of intent to implement the fiber optic network in all parts of the city was signed, reports the city of Karben on its website. Yplay Germany, part of the blue networks group of companies, focuses on the marketing of multimedia services such as high-speed Internet, stable telephony and digital television. New municipalities are also interested in collaborating, including Altenstadt, Niddatal and Limeshain.

Development of planning

In order to be able to address the upcoming challenges, a funding program was launched to address the so-called “grey spots”. Tenders are already underway, with plans set to begin in 2026. The project will therefore not only benefit the citizens and companies of Karben, but also other communities in the region that are looking for successful solutions for a high-performance internet connection.

All of these measures provide Karben with crucial support on the way to a modern, digital infrastructure. In this sense, the city is ideally positioned to meet the requirements of the future and invest heavily in digital transformation. Further information about the project can be found on the Karben city website and in a detailed report by the Frankfurter Neue Press.
