Former students are bringing back the Weidig musical Out of their own free will”!

The anticipation for a very special cultural event in Butzbach is growing: The Weidig musical “Aus voluntarily”, which had to be stopped in 2020 due to the corona pandemic, will soon be brought to the stage. Former members of the Weidig School's musical group took up the project again and quickly founded an association to realize the performance. In doing so, they present a piece that is not only artistically outstanding, but is also deeply rooted in Butzbach's history.

Friedrich Ludwig Weidig, the school's namesake, played a central role in this musical. The protester and journalist, born in Oberkleen in 1791, was a vehement advocate of human rights and democratic values. His life and work, especially the spread of the “Hessian Landbote” and his imprisonment for political activities, are central themes of the musical. Wikipedia describes him as the “father of Hessian drill” and a courageous fighter for freedom who ultimately lost his will to live due to oppression.

Performance dates and presentation

The musical will be performed in the Butzbach community center. For all those curious and fans, there is already data about the performances: The student performances will take place on May 6th and 7th, while the evening performances from May 7th to 9th start at 7 p.m. The crowning conclusion is the dernière on May 10th at 3 p.m. Tickets will soon be available online and in the Bindernagel bookstore and in the museum.

Around 80 alumni, who are fully involved in their careers and families despite their own living environment, have come together to promote this special project. The community shows cohesion and passion for art and culture, which are very popular in Butzbach. The newly founded association “Musical Butzbach e.V.” aims to promote art and culture in the region and to network young artists and those interested in culture. The club's two board members, Christoph Seibert and Alexander Fischer, are looking forward to numerous interested spectators.

A socially critical work of art

The Weidig musical combines historical facts with emotional insights into Weidig's work. It is described as a socially critical work of art that raises current questions and stimulates thought. The themes of unity in Germany, human rights and the foundations of a democratic society are in the foreground and give the piece a contemporary relevance. The musical not only has a nostalgic character, but also encourages us to reflect on today's challenges and values.

The Weidigymnasium is involved as an official partner of the musical, which underlines the close connection between education and cultural engagement in Butzbach. This project is not just a concert for the ears, but a call to engage with our history and the values that shape it.

The return of the Weidig musical is a strong sign for Butzbach's cultural landscape and shows that community and passion can make a difference. Keep May free to be part of this special event!
