Swimming fun guaranteed: Top water quality at Hesse's popular lakes!
Summer has arrived and people are drawn to the water again. There are over 60 bathing areas in Hesse that invite you to jump into the cool water. The swimming lake near Lich, known as the “forest swimming pool”, is particularly popular. Here you can enjoy carefree bathing fun, which is very popular in the region. In the Wetterau district you can also choose between natural bathing areas and family-friendly beaches, with the only official bathing area in Gedern attracting visitors. There are also eight other lakes around Gießen with their clear water.
But what about the water quality? You can breathe a sigh of relief because the responsible health authorities, in collaboration with the Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology, have already checked the waters several times during the bathing season since May. Water samples were analyzed for germs such as Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci as well as blue-green algae. The result is encouraging: the water quality in all swimming lakes in Hesse is good to excellent. More information about the bathing areas is available on the platform badeseen.hlnug.de.
Water temperatures and hygiene
The water temperature is also an important factor for small and large water lovers. The temperatures in the lakes are currently a pleasant 20 degrees and in flatter areas even up to 23 degrees. Ideal for cooling off on hot summer days! However, in order not to spoil the bathing pleasure with unpleasant surprises, there are a few tips for bathers: If the water is cloudy or there is an unpleasant smell, it is better not to jump into the water. It is also recommended to shower before bathing to wash off cosmetics and suntan oils and thus continue to ensure the quality of the water.
In Germany, a total of 2,291 bathing waters were monitored in 2024 Federal Environment Agency reported. Over 98% of these waters met EU quality requirements. These numbers show that you can generally jump into the water without any worries if you follow the recommendations.
A look at the Lahn
Despite the many beautiful swimming lakes, Baden in the Lahn does not go unnoticed. Although it is not forbidden, the responsible authorities recommend against swimming there, as the Lahn is not an EU-registered bathing water and is therefore not monitored to the same extent. Tempting at first glance, but you don't want to forego hygienic safety. After all, awareness of water quality and hygiene is very important, and this is a good thing.
