Honor for Bad Nauheimer: Civil courage stops gang of burglars!

In Bad Nauheim, moral courage is very important. Sebastian Maryska, a local resident, secured an honorable place in the community during Hessentag in Bad Vilbel on June 22, 2025. He received an award for his tireless efforts in catching a gang of burglars. Prime Minister Boris Rhein presented a total of 49 awards, including honors for members of the police, federal police and the US Army. Maryska was one of the outstanding heroes of the day, exposing crime with his courageous actions.

On a relaxing day off, Maryska witnessed an attempted break-in in his neighborhood. Instead of letting it happen, he acted immediately, filmed the crime with his cell phone and immediately informed the police. When the perpetrators realized they were being watched, they fled. But thanks to the information reported by Maryska, including the license plate number of the getaway car, the police were then able to solve two home break-ins and two license plate thefts in Wetterau. Supporting surveillance camera footage confirmed his statements and helped advance the investigation.

Honor for brave citizens

The awards that Prime Minister Rhein presented in Bad Vilbel included 15 Hessian rescue medals, eight letters of honor, seven certificates of thanks and recognition and 19 public commendations. "Your actions are a remarkable example of civil courage. You contribute to ensuring that we live in a safe and peaceful Hesse," the Prime Minister praised the outstanding citizens and emphasized the important role of the individual in combating crime.

At a time when many people tend to look the other way, Maryska shows that bold intervention can make a difference. We are all legally obliged to do what we can when crimes occur. According to the website of the German Statutory Accident Insurance, people who actively help are generally insured against accidents, which additionally rewards the courage to show civil courage. Each individual therefore bears responsibility for a peaceful and civilized coexistence.

The role of the police and their officers

But it's not just the civilian population that is important. The police also played an important role in solving the crimes. Police Chief Inspectors (POK) like those who were involved in the investigations not only have successful studies behind them, but also take on leadership roles in the higher service.

Maryska's commitment and the commitment of the police show how important cooperation and moral courage are in society. Success in solving crimes is often the result of the combined efforts of thoughtful citizens and dedicated officers.
