Volkswagen ID. Buzz AD: The first autonomous shared taxi is coming to Hamburg!
Something exciting is happening again in the automotive world: Volkswagen is planning to...self-driving ID. Buzz ADto be on the roads by the end of 2025. The innovative electric van is intended to be used as an autonomous electric shared taxi and could thus revolutionize the mobility concept in cities. Loud MIRROR became the ID. Buzz AD was already presented at the IAA 2021 and is now heading towards its series version. The ADAC tested the prototype in the Munich area and achieved promising results.
But what does the ID do? Buzz AD so special? The vehicle is equipped with the latest technology, including:11 radar sensors, 6 lidars and 14 cameras. These sensors enable safe navigation through road traffic. Volkswagen is working with the companies Argo AI and Mobileye to develop the vehicle. The first test drive with passengers took place at the IAA 2023, with the safety driver trained to intervene quickly in an emergency.
Technical details and safety aspects
The system is designed to collect data for mapping and traffic analysis in order to react flexibly to new traffic situations. It strictly adheres to road traffic regulations and, according to VW, is even safer than human drivers. However, there are challenges: In special traffic situations, the vehicle could reach its limits. In such cases, the emergency control center can control the vehicle remotely.
Volkswagen's main goal is to introduce autonomous driving at Level 4, with some aspects of Level 5, meaning the vehicle can operate independently in most situations. The initial plan is to launch the shared taxi service in Hamburg, where the ID. Buzz will support users as part of the Moia ridepooling offering. This innovative service will then be an official part of local public transport.
A look at global developments
The plans for the ID. However, Buzz AD should not be viewed in isolation. Similar autonomous services are already in use in other cities such as San Francisco and Beijing, which could serve as models for future mobility in Germany. This makes it clear that Volkswagen wants to seize the opportunity to take a leading role in this rapidly growing market.
Overall, it shows that Volkswagen with the ID. Buzz AD is pursuing a comprehensive concept for the future of urban transport. With a good hand in implementation, this modern electric van could fundamentally change the driving experience in cities.
