S-Bahn closure between Frankfurt and Offenbach: This is what commuters need to know!
From October 2, 2025, the route between Frankfurt Mühlberg and Offenbach Ost will be closed for three weeks due to construction work.

S-Bahn closure between Frankfurt and Offenbach: This is what commuters need to know!
In the region between Frankfurt and Offenbach, a major change for commuters is planned from October 2, 2025. The City Tunnel, which connects the two cities, will be completely closed until October 20, 2025. The reason for these measures is extensive construction work on rails and switches, which also includes modernizing fire protection. The S-Bahn lines that are affected during this time will have to be rerouted, which will require additional planning for travelers. This is reported by the Giessen General.
The affected S-Bahn lines are the S1, S2, S8 and S9. Several stops will be canceled: For example, the Frankfurt-Mühlberg, Offenbach-Kaiserlei, Offenbach-Ledermuseum and Offenbach-Marktplatz stops will no longer be available on the S1. The S2 will also not stop at the Taunusanlage, Hauptwache, Konstablerwache, Ostendstraße or the stations mentioned above. The S8 and S9 are also affected and will be rerouted, meaning some stops will not be served. Commuters have to prepare for additional travel time!
Details about the replacement measures
In order to compensate for the loss of the S-Bahn, a replacement rail service will be set up. This includes four replacement bus lines that are intended to maintain important connections:
- S1E: Zwischen Offenbach Ost und Konstablerwache.
- S2E: Zwischen Offenbach-Zentrum Hauptbahnhof und Konstablerwache.
- S8E: Zwischen Offenbach Ost Ostbahnhof und Frankfurt Flughafen.
- S9E: Zwischen Offenbach Ost Ostbahnhof und Frankfurt Südbahnhof.
The preparatory work in the city area will begin as early as April 28, 2025. At night, commuters can expect corresponding restrictions while extensive work takes place in the tunnel and at the bus stops.
Extent of construction work
How nahverkehr-ffm.de reported, the work is significant. Around 15 kilometers of rails in the tunnel will be replaced, while 5 kilometers of rails and five switches in Offenbach Ost station will be maintained. There are also new fire protection measures and the expansion of tunnel emergency lighting. During the construction work, commuters must also expect nighttime and partial full closures until July 4, 2025 in order to improve the quality of the S-Bahn connection in the long term.
The work is not only necessary, it is also an investment in the safety and reliability of the connection between two important regions. It is therefore important to prepare well and, if necessary, use alternative means of transport to bridge this difficult time. The bottom line, however, is that it will be worth it - after all, interim challenges always have a big end in mind.
