Bees, caps and children's questions: root children explore nature!

What's in Wachenbuch? Today the little naturalists from the Wachenbuch Kita Kilianstädter Straße, also known as the “root children”, can celebrate the completion of the “From the Blossom to the Apple” project. On July 2, 2025, the children visited beekeeper Lorenz to experience first hand how versatile and important bees are for our environment. On this exciting excursion, the children not only learned what fruit formation is all about, but also about the important role bees play in nature.

The curious children had the opportunity to observe a beehive and learned a lot about the fascinating production of honey. The children were particularly fascinated by the queen bee and the organization in the bee colony. They dutifully asked questions that revealed their thirst for knowledge: How do bees work together? How do they make honey? These questions help to convey knowledge about natural relationships and create an appreciation for the protection of animals and plants.

The ecological importance of beekeeping

But what makes beekeeping so important for our environment? A look at the ecological background shows that environmentally friendly beekeeping not only protects nature, but also promotes biodiversity. Beekeepers who use organic methods make a crucial contribution to the pollination of plants and the stability of ecosystems. The demand for organic honey is increasing, which brings both challenges and opportunities. In Germany there are strict guidelines for organic beekeeping that prioritize bee health. Provided with natural materials and no synthetic treatment agents, the beekeepers take care of their colonies.

But there are also challenges in organic beekeeping: diseases, extreme weather conditions and food shortages cause problems for beekeepers. Nevertheless, efforts towards sustainable beekeeping and the protection of natural habitats are essential to counteract the decline of bees. Measures to promote bee health also include education and training for beekeepers, bringing them up to date on organic beekeeping practices.

Outlook for the future

With a conversion period of at least a year, beekeepers must think about converting their operations to organic farming methods. It is important that the beehives are at a sufficient distance from sources of pollution. The defense against bee pests and environmental influences is of great importance for the well-being and health of the colonies. Training for beekeepers includes both basic and advanced techniques of organic beekeeping, which is critical to the sustainable future of beekeeping.

The Root Children's recent experience clearly shows how important it is to sensitize children early on about the environment and the importance of bees. They ask not just why, but how, and that could be one of the keys to raising a new generation of conservationists and beekeepers. And what does it say? You can never start learning early enough!

All in all, it can be said that the “root children” not only learned a lot about bees through their tour of discovery, but also about responsibility for our nature. It's a win for all of us!
