Construction of the northern Mainian S-Bahn: Two new stations for Frankfurt!

On June 30, 2025, a large chapter for local public transport in Hesse begins: the construction work for the North Main S-Bahn is finally picking up speed. This project is one of the most important in German rail traffic and is part of the series of outstanding developments such as the new long -distance railway tunnel at Frankfurt Central Station and the four -track expansion of the S6. With the new S-Bahn line, which runs from Hanau via Maintal to Frankfurt, rail traffic in the region is significantly upgraded.

The core components of the project include the construction of additional tracks along the existing route and the creation of two new stations: Frankfurt-Ost (deep) and Frankfurt-Fechenheim. This means not only an increase in capacities, but also a relief of the existing rail network. In addition, a new tunnel section with two single -track tubes is built on about 1.4 kilometers between the Konstablerwache and Frankfurt (Main) East.

project costs and challenges

Originally was calculated for the North Main S-Bahn with costs of 1.29 billion euros. But the reality is now different: According to current estimates, the costs are now 1.96 billion euros and could even increase over two billion euros. This is primarily due to increased market prices and material costs. In particular, the additional costs for level crossings were not included in the original financing plan, which also complicated the situation. Deutsche Bahn plans to secure the financing from the final implementation of the construction work, which is currently not quite successful. However, a planning approval decision for two out of three sections is expected in the coming months, which could advance project progress.

The main work should begin in the course of the year and the entire project has a desired completion period in the early years of the 2030s. The first construction sites have already been set up: in Hanau, for example, a new railway overpass was put into operation in May 2023, which plays an essential role for future infrastructure.

The greater connection

The North Main S-Bahn is part of an extensive renovation program of Deutsche Bahn, which will invest a total of 53 billion euros in the rail network and the train stations by 2027. This program not only takes care of new construction projects, but also the general renovation of existing infrastructure and the modernization of 400 train stations. A large part of the projects will be realized on high -frequent routes such as Frankfurt - Mannheim by the end of 2027, which contributes to improving the rail infrastructure and increasing punctuality.

The North Main S-Bahn is not only an important individual project, but is also part of a comprehensive plan of Deutsche Bahn to make the entire transport infrastructure in Germany future-proof. With the increasing number of new tracks and stations, traveling in the region should not only become faster, but also more comfortable. So stay tuned - the future of local transport in Hessen has just started!
