Perfect Parenting Under Pressure: Gen Z Fears and Challenges!

The challenges that young parents face today are anything but trivial. Generation Z in particular, whose first representatives are currently entering parenthood, are under enormous pressure to consider their parenting methods to be perfect. According to a report by Hanauer A study by Pronova BKK showed that around 47 percent of these parents regularly doubt their suitability. What is particularly worrying is that one in two mothers constantly wonder whether they are really good enough - a phenomenon known as “mom impostor syndrome” that leaves many women feeling insecure about their role.

Of the fathers, on the other hand, only one in three say they question themselves so often. This discrepancy is reflected not only in self-doubt, but also in communication between parents, which increasingly takes place on social media instead of on playgrounds. Katharina Hübner, educator and family counselor, describes that many parents believe they have done something wrong when their children cry. It's no wonder that irritability over small mishaps is becoming more common - almost half of all parents say they often react irritably in such moments.

Parenting in the age of social media

In contrast to the challenges plaguing Gen Z parents, Millennials – born between 1980 and 1995 – are not finding their path to parenthood easy either. They tend to describe their parenting methods as “needs-oriented,” with a focus on loving and respectful interaction with children. Strategies of advice like “Let him scream” are less common in this generation. A survey shows that mothers in this age group often suffer from the pressure of having to be a good mother, which leads to high levels of stress. Discussions about parenting are increasingly taking place on social media, where mothers and fathers talk openly about their challenges and often share advice.

For many parents, the constant pursuit of perfect parenting means a sometimes compulsive conformity to what is viewed as ideal in the online world. Hübner emphasizes that it is important to also take the needs of the parents into account in order to build a healthy bond with the child and not break it because of one's own demands. The authentic parenting movement, which invites people to honestly report on their own experiences, is becoming increasingly popular. More and more parents are admitting to their insecurities and the pressure they are under.

Needs-oriented education – an outlook

An everyday example illustrates the theory: A mother, Sabrina, asks her daughter to take off her shoes, but the blonde girl stubbornly resists. After twenty minutes of crying and kicking, Sabrina shows understanding for her daughter's emotions and patiently explains the situation. Such a reaction is entirely consistent with the recommendations of needs-based parenting, which aims to respect the feelings and needs of both the child and the parents.

Parenting issues are diverse, and the challenges mothers and fathers face are influenced by a variety of factors - from social media to their own parents' traditional parenting methods. The pressure for “maximally insecure parenting,” as generation researcher Rüdiger Maas describes it, cannot be ignored, and the search for information about parenting is happening more and more quickly online. These developments raise new questions: How do parents manage to offer their children a stable bond while at the same time having to meet their own demands?

The picture of modern parenthood is colorful, complex and provokes open discussion about the challenges and joys experienced by both Generation Z and Millennials. Parenting styles evolve, and often the pressure that parents put on themselves becomes the biggest hurdle.
