Bus is stuck in Gelnhausen: long traffic jam after accident!
A failed turning maneuver by a bus brought state road 3201 between Haitz and Neuwirtheim to a standstill for over six hours on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred when the driver, who had apparently lost his way with his navigation device, had the rear axle of his vehicle hovering over a ditch, making the vehicle undriveable. The police were informed at 9.35 p.m. by a concerned driver who noticed the bus standing sideways. A great deal of effort was required to recover the vehicle, which is why the road had to remain completely closed until around 3:30 a.m. that night. Fortunately, the occupants were spared injuries, but the damage to the bus is still under investigation.
The circumstances of the rescue were anything but ordinary. A mobile crane had to be organized to move the vehicle and reopen the road. It turns out that despite the technical aids that modern navigation devices offer, good old orientation is still needed from time to time. Such a blockage can be problematic not only for drivers, but also for the rapid implementation of rescue and recovery operations.
Transport connections and security
Such incidents highlight the need to continually monitor road conditions and traffic routing in rural areas. The incident could also raise questions about road safety: How safe are the paths in less frequented areas? Do the navigation devices deliver what they promise, or should additional local road knowledge be taken into account, especially in bad weather conditions?
In the meantime, it remains to be seen what measures will be taken by those responsible at the local level to avoid such mishaps in the future. Whether further educational work or technical adjustments to the navigation systems could be helpful is a topic that should perhaps be discussed in the coming weeks.
