Music for young people: Pegasus program starts new season in Frankfurt!
In Frankfurt, music is held in high regard for young people, and the Alte Oper's Pegasus program presents itself as a real source of inspiration. “The program is not intended as a marketing tool, but rather an initiative for today’s young people,” explains Markus Fein, artistic director and managing director of the Alte Oper. Since its founding in 2012, Pegasus has aimed to promote music not only as a form of entertainment, but as an important part of education. With around 280,000 visitors and 1,500 events that have taken place since then, a large number of 137 additional events will be added from September 2023. This information comes from a report by FAZ.
The program offers a wide musical range for children, teenagers and young adults. The highlights include special offers such as the discovery concerts for babies and the “Ten to 25” program, which initially makes attending the concert affordable for young adults. From June 23, 2023, tickets for the children's events can now be booked three times per season and three months in advance. This gives families a flexible way to plan their concert attendance.
Commitment to schools
A central goal of the Pegasus program is to encourage more schools to integrate music as an integral part of the curriculum. Constantin Zill, the program director, emphasizes the importance of working with schools and educators to strengthen sustainable relationships. The focus is also on new experience formats for older primary school students and a festival called “Podium Future”.
In the coming 2025/26 season there is an exciting in-house production called “Hop!” planned, which will be directed by Anselm Dalferth. This news can be found on the Alte Oper website, where the program for 2025/26 is already available online and planning for future concert visits has begun. Those interested can already book tickets, which will go on sale at staggered times. This gives families and young people the opportunity to access concerts at particularly short notice.
Music and social work
The integration of music into education is not just a question of entertainment - it also has significant effects on social work with young people. This is discussed, among other things, in Sabrina Zehntmair's monograph entitled “The Power of Music”. Music is described as a powerful medium capable of triggering and expressing emotions and plays an essential role in arts education. It is an interesting link between the social integration of young people and the targeted educational work that is supported by the music offering Pedagogy specialist portal.
With these initiatives and formats, the Pegasus program not only focuses on entertainment, but also on education, integration and social participation of young people in Frankfurt. Music creates connections and opens up new perspectives - there's something there!
