Kassel is the happiness metropolis - Frankfurt at the end of the list!

A lot is happening in Hesse when it comes to life satisfaction - and especially in Kassel. The city has once again secured the title of the happiest city in Germany! In the SKL Happiness Atlas, Kassel takes the top spot with a score of 7.44, leaving many larger cities behind. This shows that satisfaction can often be found in smaller, family environments, while metropolises like Frankfurt have to struggle with their challenges.

As the Hessian/Lower Saxony General According to reports, Frankfurt is only in 35th place in comparison and therefore clearly has some catching up to do. The city not only struggles with the high cost of living, but also with traffic problems. A topic that concerns many people in Frankfurt. Although the quality of life is objectively not bad, many residents feel less satisfied than in smaller cities.

City ranking and quality of life

In comparison, Kassel demonstrates its strengths: a young population, numerous green spaces and good medical care ensure a high level of life satisfaction. With 7.44 points, Kassel is the best city in the 2025 city ranking, followed by Augsburg and Aachen, both of which have 7.33 points. Even if the objective quality of life in Kassel is rated as average, the distribution of happiness plays a crucial role. This uniformity of satisfaction makes the city stand out, whereas conditions in large cities are often unequal.

According to the Explosive People in large cities with over 400,000 inhabitants tend to be less happy. Sometimes even greater wealth does not lead to the desired satisfaction. Instead of giving preference to large metropolises like Munich or Frankfurt, many prefer to settle in cities like Kassel, where everyday life is a little more relaxed.

Negative trends in big cities

The life satisfaction survey, which surveyed a total of 23,468 people between January 2022 and April 2025, shows that loners and below-average environmental quality massively reduce satisfaction in large cities. Wiesbaden is in 39th place and Rostock in last place 40th is the unhappiest cities in Germany. Both are clearly behind compared to Kassel, which is green and family-friendly.

The German capital Berlin didn't fare any better either: at 37th place, Berliners' life satisfaction is also rather poor. On average, many large cities sit at the bottom of the list, while Kassel and other smaller cities take the lead because they offer the right mix of quality of life and satisfaction.

In summary, it can be said that on the one hand the positive trend is holding up and on the other hand smaller cities like Kassel are showing what true happiness really means. The comparison between subjective life satisfaction and objectively measured quality of life proves that the best living conditions do not always guarantee the highest level of satisfaction. Kassel is the best example of how things can be done differently. Anyone who has a good knack for the right living environment can be truly happy.
