Expensive cycle path provision in the Rheingau: 137 million euros for 11 kilometers!
Rüdesheim am Rhein, Deutschland - The cyclists and drivers in Rheingau are facing a challenging time. From June 25, construction work for the gap in the Rheinufer between Rüdesheim and Assmannshausen will begin, which should last until spring 2026. The budget for the associated provisional is two million euros, while total expenses for the bike path are already 137 million euros for eleven kilometers, such as the FAZ reported.
The planned construction work is located on federal road 42 and are intended to increase the safety of all road users. For the time of the construction work, comprehensive traffic restrictions that will be tested to the test will be expected. The traffic from Rüdesheim to Assmannshausen remains on the B 42, while the reverse traffic via Presberg is diverted. This detour leads from Assmannshausen via the L 3272 to Presberg and further via the L 3454 back to Rüdesheim.
Details on the construction work
Central elements of the new cycle pathway are traffic light systems at both ends of the section to ensure a safe crossing of the lively B 42. Cyclists have to adjust to the L 3034 and the Niederwald monument from Assmannshausen via a detour from Assmannshausen-a path that is only suitable for experienced cyclists or e-bikes. Ferry traffic between Rüdesheim and Bingen will also be affected, in particular it will be temporarily only possible to drive onto the ferry from Rüdesheim. The Hessian state government provides information about electronic scoreboards that are provided at alternatives such as the ferry in Kaub or the Autobahn 60 indicate.
displeasure about the fact that the provisional was not part of the construction work as planned from the start. Critics complain that planning authorities should have had a good hand here in order to avoid delays from the outset. The construction period for the approximately 300 -meter -long cycle path route, which runs on a disused railway track, is expected to take a total of nine months. Drivers have to prepare for further nine months of traffic disruptions.
long -term planning and challenges
The construction of a future tunnel connection at the Rüdesheim level crossing could lead to closures again. The tunnel construction will be expected here at the earliest after 2030. This shows once again that the expansion of the transport infrastructure in Germany, and especially in Hesse, seems to have a low importance, which is criticized
The wine towns Assmannshausen and Lorch will be directly affected during the active construction period in summer, which certainly also has an impact on the tourist offers. Many visitors who travel over the ferry of Bingen are forced to take a detour via Presberg. For everyone involved, patience is required while the construction work is progressing.
