Appreciation in the workplace: How to keep your job safe and fulfilling!

In Germany, many employees have the feeling that their hard work is not sufficiently recognized. According to a recent study conducted by Randstad as part of Employer Brand Research 2025, 41% of respondents say they lack recognition and appreciation in the workplace. These results have a clear message: motivation and productivity suffer from a lack of appreciation.

However, the topic of appreciation is not just a trend, but an essential part of a healthy corporate culture. What is even more alarming is the fact that 20% of those surveyed said poor leadership was a major factor in their upcoming job change. Among unmotivated employees, almost a third even intend to leave the company if the situation does not change. The key to positive employee retention lies in the ability to show appreciation through simple means such as words of thanks, trust and recognition of successes.

Appreciation and its effects

The effects of an appreciative corporate culture are complex. Companies that are able to show appreciation not only benefit from increased employee motivation, but also from better team collaboration. Successful collaboration depends not only on professional skills, but also on the emotional well-being of employees. According to the DGB “Good Work” Index 2018, a third of employees felt little or not valued at all, which has demotivating consequences.

Real appreciation includes more than just praise. It is based on respectful interaction and interest in the person behind the employee. Employees who feel accepted as a whole and who have the opportunity to express or shape their opinions show greater identification with their company.

Create a healthy work environment

In addition to mutual appreciation, organizational measures play a central role. Fair compensation, the right to have a say and diversity are essential building blocks that companies should anchor structurally in order to promote a healthy working environment. It is not enough to clarify appreciation individually with each employee - it must be enshrined in the company values.

Randstad, one of the leading human resources management companies with around 32,200 employees in Germany, relies on these principles. In 2024, Randstad Germany achieved sales of 1.648 billion euros, making it a significant player in the industry. The “Randstad Employer Brand Research” study, which has been carried out for 25 years, looks at the wishes of employees and makes it clear which companies they would like to work for.

What remains to be done? Companies are required to focus more on the issue of appreciation in order not only to prevent the departure of talented employees, but also to create a pleasant working atmosphere. Ultimately, everyone benefits from an open and respectful corporate culture.

The results of the Randstad study show that appreciation is not just a formal gesture, but a decisive factor for the success of a company - the following applies here: A good salary and a good work-life balance are important, but appreciation from the employer must not be forgotten.
