New master plan for Rüsselsheim: City development under expert hands!
Something is happening in the area of urban development in Rüsselsheim am Main. The experienced city planner Jens Weisener, who has been working in the department office of City Councilor Simon Valerius since August 1, 2025, brings a breath of fresh air to strategic urban development. Simon Valerius emphasizes that it is urgently necessary to develop a clear overall picture and goal for urban development, especially with regard to the soon-to-be-vacated Opel factory space.
Weisener, who worked in Mannheim for 14 years and developed conversion areas of around 500 hectares there, brings a lot of experience with him. Sustainable development approaches that are not only ecological, but also economically and socially viable are particularly important to him. He wants to incorporate the knowledge he gathered from the 2023 Federal Garden Show in Rüsselsheim into his planning. “I would like to develop a comprehensive mission statement and a master plan for Rüsselsheim,” emphasizes the city planner. He sees the involvement of relevant actors and institutions as crucial in order to create new forms of cooperation and, above all, to integrate youth into the process.
A budget and sustainability concept
Jens Weisener's vision includes not only the physical development of areas, but also the creation of vibrant, sustainable communities. The aim is to design cities so that they meet the needs of their residents while protecting the environment. A central aspect is the implementation of the sustainability goals in accordance with the UN guidelines, in particular Goal 11, which aims at sustainable cities and communities. You can find out more about this on the website Federal Environment Ministry.
Born in Berlin, he studied urban and regional planning at the Technical University of Berlin and earned a Master of Architecture in Urban Design at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art. Before his time in Mannheim, he gained experience in several planning offices in Berlin and at Albert Speer & Partner in Frankfurt. While he is moving to Rüsselsheim, he is temporarily living in Haßloch-Nord, but his thoughts are already turning to the future of the city.
A good plan for the city
What exactly will Weisener's plan look like? By involving all relevant actors in the development process, he can ensure that the needs of citizens are at the forefront. “I have a good knack for what works in cities and what doesn’t,” says the urban planner. In times of change - and the Opel sites offer a unique opportunity - it will depend on how creatively you tackle the challenges.
It remains exciting to see how Rüsselsheim will develop under the leadership of Jens Weisener. With it we can expect a planning approach that is not only future-oriented, but also sustainably improves the quality of life for city residents.
