Groß-Gerau district is fighting the climate crisis: Participation in action week!
The Groß-Gerau district will be actively involved in the nationwide climate adaptation week from September 15th. This initiative is a right step in responding to the climate crisis and shows a joint effort to adapt to the growing challenges posed by climate change. How Rheinmainverlag reports, the action week was launched by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) and organized by the Center for Climate Adaptation (ZKA).
The district administration and the district adult education center (KVHS) cordially invite all citizens to take part in a series of exciting events. It starts with a lecture by Dr. Eva Distler on September 15th at 6 p.m. in the district office. She will talk about ecological gardening and heat-resistant design of areas, followed by a tour of the wild herb bed.
Exciting events on climate adaptation
The information event about heavy rain events is on the program on September 16th at 6 p.m. Experts from the district administration provide insights into the “sponge city” concept and offer tips on precautionary measures in your own home. A particularly topical topic as more and more regions are affected by more extreme weather events.
Like that Federal Environment Agency states, the year 2023 was the warmest year since measurements began in 1881. Austria, like many other countries, is feeling the consequences of climate change. There is therefore an urgent need to raise awareness and refresh knowledge on climate adaptation.
On September 17th at 5 p.m. there will be an online lecture about the district's heat action plan, which serves to protect the population from extreme heat consequences. September 18th will then be rounded off with a garden tour in Mörfelden-Walldorf at 3:30 p.m., where a publicly accessible community garden will be presented. This event is carried out in collaboration with the city of Mörfelden and the Lower Nature Conservation Authority.
Joint celebration dedicated to the climate
The crowning conclusion of the campaign week will be a joint picnic in the courtyard of Dornberg Castle on September 19th from 2 p.m. Under the motto “bring-along party”, there will be an opportunity to exchange ideas and chat over snacks and drinks. The “Climate Fever Timeline” will also be presented, which is sure to attract many interested people. There is a fee of 10 euros for the picnic.
All events are freely accessible, but it is advisable to register in advance via the city page for Climate Adaptation Week to secure a place. This action week is funded as part of the German Climate Change Adaptation Strategy (DAS), which was approved by the Federal Cabinet.
The German Climate Adaptation Strategy 2024 provides a total of 33 goals and 45 sub-goals that are intended to strengthen the nationwide approach to the challenges of climate change. These measures, as by BMUKN presented are crucial because adaptation is not something that can be put off for a long time.
At a time when extreme weather events are increasing and climate challenges are approaching us, it's time to tackle things together and make a difference. Let's use Climate Adaptation Week as an opportunity to learn more about our environment and actively contribute to solving climate issues!
