Darmstadt is fighting for the future: First results on mobility peace!

What's new from Darmstadt? Today the Science City presents the first results of the online participation in the “Future Mobility Peace Plan”. This campaign took place from April 29th to May 30th, 2025 and was met with great interest: over 500 people took part and left almost 1,400 posts, more than 400 comments and over 2,000 ratings. A clear sign that citizens care about their mobility, as [rheinmainverlag.de](https://www.rheinmainverlag.de/2025/07/06/erste- Results-der-online-teilig-zur-mobilitaetssituation-in-darmstadt-legen-vor/) reports.

The range of topics was broad. The cycle paths and road layout as well as local public transport were particularly frequently mentioned. Concerns such as car sharing, traffic light switching and the design of city traffic were also discussed. Safety risks in walking and cycling as well as accessibility show that there is still a need for improvement. The contributions collected come from all parts of Darmstadt and even from the surrounding regions.

The desire for improvements

Citizens’ feedback is systematically evaluated and incorporated into the status analysis for the integrated transport development plan “ZukunftMobil Darmstadt”. A supplementary survey on current mobility usage showed that the majority travel most often by bike, followed by tram, walking and car. The desire for better conditions for cycling is particularly popular, followed by improved offerings for pedestrians and local public transport.

Paul Georg Wandrey, head of the mobility department, calls on citizens to actively participate and is planning the next phase of the participation process for autumn 2025. There will be public forums to discuss the goals and the model for future mobility in Darmstadt. The dates have already been set: the North Forum will take place on Friday, September 12th, followed by the Downtown Forum on Saturday, September 13th, and the South Forum on Wednesday, September 17th.

Looking into the future

The changes in traffic behavior are not only important locally. A study on everyday mobility, which was carried out as part of the research project “Mobility in Cities – SrV”, shows similar trends. Over 280,000 people in around 500 municipalities were surveyed, and the results make it clear that walking and cycling traffic in particular has increased. The use of public transport has visibly recovered after a decline caused by the pandemic, and the positive feedback on offers such as the 9-euro ticket also contributes to this, report colleagues from [internationales-verkehrswesen.de](https://www.internationales-verkehrswesen.de/studie-zu-alltagsmobilitaet-in-staedten-zieht-wandel-im-verkehrs Behavior-auf/).

There's a lot going on in Darmstadt, and the city administration takes citizens' suggestions seriously. The upcoming forums offer a good opportunity for everyone to actively shape mobility in their city and to contribute wishes and ideas.
