Multifunctional building in Gundernhausen: Education redesigned!

Yesterday an important chapter for the Gundernhäuser School came to an end when the new multifunctional building was officially handed over. The conversion of a former inn from the 1970s, which was adapted to the needs of the students, is a big step towards a modern educational infrastructure. On the occasion of Handover of the building on June 27, 2025, there were many interested people on site. The Darmstadt-Dieburg district's investment amounts to around 600,000 euros and includes not only a cafeteria, but also two multifunctional rooms for various school activities.

The challenges during the renovation should not be underestimated. A lack of existing documents and undetected fire damage from the 1980s made construction work more difficult. In addition, defective sewage underground pipes had to be replaced. Thanks to the close cooperation with the Roßdorf municipal building authority, the safety standards and electrical distributions could be implemented in a timely and reliable manner. The new building now offers space for up to 140 children in two shifts and is intended to meet the needs of the growing student population.

New school building planned

Another reason to be happy: The district has secured the property for the planned new construction of a two-class elementary school. This novel project is to be built on an 8,200 square meter area behind the local sports field. The first district councilor and head of the school department, Lutz Köhler, described the purchase of the property as an important step for the educational infrastructure in the region. He emphasized that the current school building in the town center is already reaching its capacity limits and the expansion on site is fraught with difficulties. The new location could therefore offer a transformative opportunity for the students in Gundernhausen. Rhein Main Verlag reports that the next steps now include the preparation of the purchase agreement and the creation of building rights by the municipality of Roßdorf.

The school principal Laura Scholz expressed her enthusiasm about the possibility of building a modern school building that meets the spatial needs of the school community. Norman Zimmermann, mayor of the municipality of Roßdorf, spoke of a milestone that should now be continued quickly.

Background on educational infrastructure

The need to invest in educational infrastructure is also reflected in a recent study by PwC. This highlights that school properties can be a lucrative investment, as many school buildings are in need of overhaul and there is a high demand for new buildings. Long-term rental agreements and reliable rental income make these investments particularly attractive. In view of the increasing number of students, especially due to earlier waves of immigration, many municipalities are faced with the challenge of not being able to make the necessary investments on their own, which makes private-sector partnerships seem sensible.

With the renovation of the Gundernhausen School and the plans for the new building on a spacious plot of land, an important step is being taken to improve both the quality of education and the infrastructure in Gundernhausen and to offer the students a contemporary learning environment.
