Hesse's hospitals: 1.26 million patients – a new record!

In the current health statistics, Hesse will show a remarkable increase in the number of patients treated as inpatients in 2024. According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung The numbers rose by 2.5 percent to a total of 1.26 million treatment cases. This corresponds to an increase of 30,938 patients compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the number of treatments remains 7.9 percent below the level in 2019, before pandemic restrictions impacted health care.

Last year, 35,060 beds were made available in Hessian hospitals, which means 223 beds or around 0.6 percent more than in the previous year. According to the data, 91,628 people were employed in the clinics at the end of 2024, an increase of 3,000 people, which corresponds to an increase of 3.4 percent. Statistics Hesse highlights that the average hospital stay was 7.2 days, a slight decrease compared to 2023.

Content of the treatments

A closer look at the treatment numbers shows that a significant proportion of patients, namely 32.3 percent, were treated in internal medicine. General surgery followed with 16.3 percent, while 8.2 percent related to gynecology and obstetrics. This distribution reflects the different needs of patients and shows where medical care is very popular in Hesse.

Staff development

The increase in medical and nursing staff is particularly noticeable. Of the 15,291 doctors employed, 66.1 percent worked as assistants, while the proportion of women in the entire medical staff was 48.8 percent. In the nursing service, 82.8 percent of the 41,431 employees were women. These changes reflect an overall improved personnel situation.

Another interesting aspect is that the number of employees in the nursing service increased by 4.6 percent in 2024, while the proportion of part-time workers in the same area is 44.7 percent.

Summary

In summary, it can be said that the hospitals in Hesse have recorded a positive development in terms of both treatment capacities and staff. Despite the challenges created by the pandemic, the region shows that it has a good hand when it comes to healthcare - although there is still room for improvement to reach pre-coronavirus numbers. However, the current statistics show that the Hessian healthcare landscape is well positioned to continue to be there for its patients in the future.
