Festival current of the future: Starkenburg relies on solar energy!
Lorsch, Deutschland - A fresh wind blows through the festival landscape in Hesse! On July 14, 2025, the focus is not only on music and good mood at the Starkenburg Festival in Heppenheim, but also an innovative project that pushes the dark side of massive energy supply into the background. Sebastian Beiwinkel from the Powered by Sun initiative gives the starting signal for a forward-looking photovoltaic project that could revolutionize the way festivals relate to energy.
In order to enable an environmentally friendly festival experience, a PV field was built for the first time in 2024, which has been supplied with electricity since then. The most important questions were on the table: How much electricity does a festival need to not only keep the stages, but also the technology of the visitors: to keep running inside? Tobias Roatsche from Young Dimension Event Technology has dealt intensively with the electricity requirement and found that a responsibility with resources is indispensable.
own solar power plant for carefree celebrations
After detailed analysis, it was decided to build a photovoltaic system in parallel with the usual electricity networks. The aim is to supply the festival as far as possible with its own energy and to minimize the need from the classic power grid. The Starkenburg Festival thus sets standards and shows how environmentally friendly solutions can be integrated into the event area. Powered by Sun also reports of other aspects that make this festival more sustainable.
In times of climate change, it is essential to take responsibility at social events. Festivals are often power guards, and with a separate PV field, an important step is taken in the right direction. This not only offers the guests a great experience, but also taken into account the environment.
A look outside the box
The concept of making festivals more sustainable is not only well received in Heppenheim. More and more event organizers are relying on environmentally friendly measures to meet responsibility towards the next generations. In general, the discussion about the energy supply at festivals is gaining driving. In the past, it was unimaginable that open-air events could supply themselves purely solar, so projects now show projects all over Germany that it is possible to combine fun and environmental protection. Amiva offers valuable insights into the positive effects of such initiatives.
The future of the festivals looks sunny, and with pioneering projects such as the Starkenburg Festival it becomes clear: environmental protection and enjoyment do not have to be mutually exclusive. At the next edition, we will definitely watch the innovative ideas and solutions to be used!
