New tour highlights Jewish life in Heppenheim - Book now!

On August 24, 2025, a new tour offer was presented in Heppenheim as part of the archive and museum's history forum, which draws attention to the city's Jewish history. The tour with the title "Life, Faith, Togetherness - Jewish History in Heppenheim" is a valuable addition to the existing remembrance offering and enriches the cooperation project "Against Forgetting. Jewish Life in Heppenheim", which the Starkenburg-Gymnasium launched in collaboration with the city archives and museum, as MRN News reports.

This tour is dedicated to Jewish life in Heppenheim from the 19th to the 20th century and thus sheds light on a previously often ignored facet of the city's history. The special exhibits include a Jewish prayer book and a kosher wine label that were discovered during excavation work in the Old Synagogue. These finds offer exciting insights into the religious practice and everyday life of Heppenheim's Jews and reflect social participation.

From the past to the present

Did you know that Jews have been living in Heppenheim since the 14th century? The first traces can be found in 1318, as documented by the Heppenheim History Association. Over the centuries, a thriving Jewish community developed. In the 18th century there was a collection of over 30 Jewish families who formed the core of the Kurmainz rural Jewry in Starkenburg.

Particularly interesting is the synagogue, which was inaugurated in 1900 and was largely donated by the Hirsch family. However, it was completely destroyed in November 1938 during the pogrom. Today only remains of the foundation remain as evidence of the once thriving Jewish community, while the property belongs to the Heppenheim Community Foundation. The historical association is actively involved in the preservation of this area.

Experiential and educational

The new tour of the Heppenheim Museum invites you to explore both the historical exhibits and the places in the city that are connected to Jewish history. A tour of the city complements the exhibition in the museum and addresses the areas of tension between belonging, demarcation and social perception. The approximately 90-minute tour can now be booked. The price is €30.00 for groups of up to 15 people, with each additional person being charged €2.00. In addition, each visit requires museum admission of €2.00 per person.

This new offer gives visitors the opportunity to delve deeper into Heppenheim's Jewish history and immerse themselves in an important journey through time. Through collaboration between various institutions, the city's cultural heritage is kept alive and new perspectives are opened up. So if you are interested in learning more about Heppenheim's past, you shouldn't miss this guided tour.
