Future Orchestra: Ulrichstein tackles topics such as health and fire services!
In a lively local discussion by the SPD Vogelsberg, which took place on June 28, 2025 in Ulrichstein-Bobenhausen II, Patrick Krug and Maximilian Ziegler emphasized the importance of direct discussions on site. Citizens showed a keen interest in the issues that affect the region, including medical care, digitalization and the expansion of fire stations. This round marks the start of a series of events entitled “Home with a Future”, which aims to listen locally and tackle things together. “A homeland with a future does not fall from the sky,” said Krug, who also pointed out the need for clear priorities.
In recent years, medical care in rural areas has noticeably deteriorated. Comprehensive medical care is of central importance, especially in regions like Vogelsberg, where the number of doctor's practices and pharmacies is constantly decreasing. Healthcare Digital report on the closure of 22 hospitals in Germany in 2023, while around 100 more are at acute risk. A lack of successors for rural doctors and the decline in new settlements make it difficult to maintain basic medical care.
Digital solutions as an answer to the shortage of skilled workers
In the context of the political discussions, Patrick Krug also spoke of planned investments in schools and modern infrastructure. This includes the digitalization of administrative processes, which not only makes administration more efficient but can also benefit medical care. An important concern here is to better network medical facilities through modern network technology, as demonstrated by Fraunhofer and their “Neighborhood Diagnostics” project. The focus on digital ecosystems has the potential to alleviate problems of undercare and reduce the workload of physicians.
According to a study by the Robert Bosch Foundation, there is a risk of a shortage of around 11,000 family doctor positions by 2035. Around 40 percent of the districts are affected. The reasons for this are manifold: an aging society, the shortage of skilled workers and the decreasing proportion of available rural doctors pose significant challenges for rural health care.
Together for a better future
The challenges mentioned, be it the construction of new fire stations or the improvement of medical care, show that there is a need for action in the region. Maximilian Ziegler also pointed out the problematic building specifications for fire stations in small villages. Here, as with medical care, joint action is required. Larger group practices and medical care centers (MVZ) are on the rise and could represent a solution to the undersupply.
The SPD Vogelsberg's willingness to cooperate and willingness to invest give rise to hope that the citizens of Vogelsberg will have a voice not only in everyday matters, but also in health care. It is essential that the discussions initiated in these local discussions do not just remain lip service, but actually lead to actionable solutions.
The next events in the series could make an important contribution to further involving citizens and setting up concrete projects. It will therefore remain exciting to see how the situation surrounding medical care and other vital areas will develop in the next few months.
