STI Group sets new standards: net zero emissions by 2030!
The STI Group, one of the leading packaging companies in Germany, recently announced a significant step towards climate protection. As reported by print.de, the company's climate targets have been officially validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). This initiative supports companies around the world to do their part to combat the climate crisis on a scientific basis.
STI Group is committed to achieving net zero emissions and is investing significantly in sustainable technologies. This includes, among other things, the expansion of solar and wind energy as well as improving the recyclability of their packaging. Investments amounting to around 1.2 million euros will go into a new photovoltaic system at the Kecskemét location in Hungary. From August 2025, this system will largely cover the plant's electricity needs from its own production.
A pioneer in the packaging industry
The STI Group sees itself as one of the companies with the most ambitious climate protection activities in the packaging industry. CEO Jakob Rinninger emphasizes the importance of sustainability in the company's strategy and emphasizes the increasing demand for CO2-optimized packaging. In times of increasing climate challenges, this is not only smart business, but also a necessary responsibility that companies should take on.
The SBTi has become more important in recent years. By the end of 2023, over 4,000 companies and financial institutions will have had their emissions reduction targets validated by SBTi. The initiative aims to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels in order to avoid catastrophic effects of climate change. To achieve this, it is essential that companies halve their CO2 emissions by 2030 and reduce them to net zero by 2050.
The role of carbon credits
In addition to on-site implementation, SBTi also plays an important role in the area of carbon credits. sgs.com explains that the revised version of the net zero standard emphasizes sustainable emissions reductions. Carbon credits are viewed as a supporting tool, but not as a replacement for direct reductions. Companies are required to set clear targets for carbon removal and minimize their emissions in all areas.
This aggressive approach will strengthen the credibility of carbon offsets. It's about relying more on permanent solutions to reduce emissions over time, rather than relying on shorter, less reliable measures. This means that external mitigation projects are also financed and investments are made in the preservation of carbon in natural ecosystems.
With its clear measures and commitment, the STI Group shows that serious climate protection is not only possible, but also necessary. Validating their climate goals is a strong signal for other companies to follow suit and actively contribute to a more sustainable future. The pressure is growing and companies are being asked to do their part to tackle the climate crisis.
