Groundbreaking ceremony for new hospital in Alsfeld: 97 million euro investment!
On November 13, 2025 the time had come: the groundbreaking ceremony for the new district hospital in Alsfeld was officially carried out. This not only marks the start of a significant construction project, but also the largest single investment in the history of the Vogelsberg district with an impressive volume of around 97 million euros. The new clinic is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2028, so that the region will soon be able to benefit from innovative medical care.
District Administrator Dr. Jens Mischak, who is also chairman of the supervisory board of Hospital GmbH, described this day as an important milestone for the entire district. “This new building will ensure sustainable medical care in rural areas,” says Mischak. The decisive course was set in 2021 with a fundamental decision by the district council, which got the plans for the new building rolling. His predecessor Manfred Görig, whose involvement in the planning was recognized as crucial, received special recognition.
Promotion and support
A project of this magnitude would not have been possible without the valuable funding from the state of Hesse. The state is contributing a total of 25 million euros, while an additional 21 million euros will flow from the municipal investment program (KIP). This results in a funding rate of over 40 percent, which is crucial for the economic feasibility of the new building. Hesse's Health Minister Diana Stolz and State Secretary Dr. Sonja Optendrenk emphasized the state's support for the hospital project during the event.
In his speech, hospital managing director Volker Röhrig emphasized the combination of modern medicine and human closeness that will characterize the new hospital. This is particularly important for patient care and creates trust in local healthcare. Alsfeld's mayor Stephan Paule was also optimistic: He described the new building as a "symbol of hope" for the region and emphasized the need to ensure basic medical care on site.
A look into the future
The new district hospital building is not only an infrastructural but also a social project that will improve the quality of life in the entire region. First District Councilor Patrick Krug, who was also present at the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasized the relevance of such a health service for the local population. The team led by architect Thomas Rettig sees the implementation as one of the keys to creating a modern healthcare location in Alsfeld.
With this symbolic act and the associated investments, the Vogelsbergkreis will once again demonstrate how important health care close to home is in rural areas. Today's event was not only a celebratory occasion, but also laid the foundation for a future-proof medical infrastructure.
