A breath of fresh air for the CDU: Martin Giese elected as new chairman!

What's new from the CDU in Alsfeld? On July 17, 2025, an important meeting of the CDU city association took place in the bakery in Eifa. The main topic of the meeting was the delegate elections for the upcoming district party conference and the election of a new party chairman. Bundestag member Frederik Bouffier was also there and reported on the latest developments from Berlin. Bouffier, who won the direct mandate in constituency 172 Gießen-Alsfeld, highlighted the CDU's successes in limiting irregular migration and emphasized how important it is to implement the coalition agreement and achieve a rapid government formation in Berlin. He describes his feelings during the uncertain hours after the election as a real "event of change" - until shortly before midnight it was unclear whether he would sit in the Bundestag or not, depending on the final number of seats for the Hesse CDU in the new parliamentary group.

The meeting in Eifa was also a farewell. Alexander Heinz, who resigned as chairman of the CDU city council group, announced that he would also resign as party chairman in November. His successor, Martin Giese, was elected as the new chairman with a large majority. Giese, who is active in the federal committee and the Hesse state board of the SME Union, emphasized the importance of teamwork and the commitment of the members, especially with a view to the upcoming local elections. He thanked Alexander Heinz for his ten years of leadership and his formative role in the party.

Electoral law reform causes uncertainty

According to Deutschlandfunk, around 82.5% of the 60 million eligible voters cast their votes in the early elections. The election involved 299 constituencies and the reform aims to reduce the size of the Bundestag to 630 members. Overhang and compensatory mandates have been abolished, meaning that most direct mandate wins must now be covered by second votes.

In summary, the CDU in Alsfeld is facing exciting change with a new chairman and challenges from electoral law reform. The upcoming local elections will certainly be a test for the new leadership led by Martin Giese, while the political debate over voting rights is likely to continue.
