Cannibal of Rotenburg: New defense attorney calls for early release!
The case of Armin Meiwes, better known as the “Cannibal of Rotenburg,” continues to make headlines even after more than two decades in prison. Meiwes has been in the Kassel I correctional facility for 23 years, and he has had a new defense attorney, Frank Füglein, for six months. He has now applied for his client to be released early, reports HNA. Previous requests for early release were rejected in 2017 and 2020, citing unfavorable legal and social forecasts as the main reasons.
Füglein visits Meiwes regularly and describes him as “intelligent, polite and pleasant to talk to”. He took over the mandate after the previous lawyer resigned. But the conditions in the Kassel I JVA have been criticized because no measures for resocialization were taken there. A lack of regular psychotherapy and a lack of relaxation could be detrimental to the rehabilitation process, which is particularly problematic for Meiwes in view of the upcoming decisions regarding his release.
Outlook for dismissal
The decision on Meiwes' early release will be postponed until the end of 2025 as a new prognosis report must be obtained. The Frankfurt public prosecutor's office has already spoken out against early release and refers to an expert report. In addition, Meiwes cannot return to his former house in Rotenburg-Wüstefeld because it was destroyed by fire on April 17, 2023.
The legal issues surrounding this scandalous case are complex. Meiwes was sentenced to eight years in prison for manslaughter in 2004, which was then overturned by the Federal Court of Justice in 2006. In the same year he was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and disturbing the peace of the dead. Another attempt at early release is now on the agenda next year.
