New extension at the Bad Hersfeld Clinic: 180 million euros for the future!
On September 24, 2025, an important milestone was set at the Bad Hersfeld Clinic: the foundation stone for the new extension building was ceremoniously laid. The ceremony, attended by around 100 guests from politics, business and administration, marks the starting signal for one of the largest clinic construction projects in Hesse. The entire investment amounts to an impressive 180 million euros, which is being raised equally by the federal government, the state of Hesse and the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district. This is intended to sustainably improve health care in rural areas, as District Administrator Torsten Warnecke emphasized.
Construction work on the clinic has been going on for over a year. Three basement floors have already been completed and planning for the next steps is in full swing. The project plans to expand the number of beds from the current 560 to 654 and create an additional 35,000 square meters of usable space. The new building will house, among other things, a modern emergency center, new operating areas, an interdisciplinary intensive care unit and a helipad. This will significantly improve patient care and optimize clinical processes.
Strengthening modern cardiac medicine
In his speech, clinic managing director Sebastian Mock emphasized that the construction of the extension is urgently needed in order to remain state-of-the-art in the future. The modern equipment is not only beneficial for the patients, but also for the working conditions of the medical staff. Prof. Marcus Franz, medical director of the clinic, supplemented this with reference to the strengthening of modern cardiac medicine and the importance of research and teaching. These aspects are of central importance for the attractiveness of the clinic.
The planning of the construction project was carried out by the architects Kirschner & Partner. Completion of the new building is scheduled for the end of 2026, so that the move to the new premises can take place by mid-2027. The laying of the foundation stone and the associated project are a sign of the development of the Bad Hersfeld Clinic and its role as an important healthcare provider in the region.
The support from the structural fund is also considerable: it invests a total of 120 million euros, with state funds making up the largest share at 60 million euros. The overall concept of the new building and the associated visionary planning are not only a benefit for the region, but also a strong signal for the future development of the medical infrastructure in Hesse.
With the start of the shell construction work and the creation of the necessary infrastructure, those responsible at the Bad Hersfeld Clinic are taking a clear position in the further development of healthcare. There is great hope that the modern facilities will help to sustainably improve patient care in the region.
