Burglaries in Hersfeld-Rotenburg: How to protect your home!

It's that time again in the cold season: the police are warning of an increase in residential burglaries in autumn and winter. As the HNA reports, the likelihood of a break-in is particularly high in the dark hours when most people are at work, shopping or just going about their daily lives. Early evenings and weekends in particular are the main times when break-ins occur.

Burglaries can be equally dangerous in urban and rural areas. In the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, 66 documented break-ins were recorded last year, of which 32 attempts remained. The statistics show that a total of 212 residential burglaries were registered in East Hesse, although 82 of these burglaries were not carried out. The police attribute the decline in the number of burglaries to intensive prevention measures and good police work.

Burglary protection is more in demand than ever

In order to counteract the problem of burglary protection, a few measures should be taken into account. As the police recommends that all doors should always be locked and windows should not be left unsecured. A simple but often overlooked detail: Over 80% of burglars are opportunists who look for easy access. It is therefore advisable to store valuables in safes or bank lockers.

Compared to the 144 burglaries in the district in 2015, where 74 attempts failed, there is a positive trend. The clearance rate for burglaries in East Hesse is around 25%, while in Hersfeld-Rotenburg it is as high as 36.4%. Overall, around 67% of crimes were solved in 2024, which shows that attentive neighbors and a quick police response are becoming increasingly important. Neighbors repeatedly manage to catch perpetrators in the act.

Prevention and advice

The police offer intensive advice on burglary protection. Citizens are invited to contact Chief Inspector Maik Dorsch to receive individual tips on securing living spaces, who can be reached on 06621/ 932 112. It is worth investing time and effort in the security of your own four walls.

Especially now that the dark season is approaching, homeowners and renters should be careful to keep their homes safe. Proven measures also include giving the impression that the home is occupied during longer absences. This can be done by neighbors keeping an eye on the apartment for safety reasons or by using timers.

Another tip from the police: avoid leaving out-of-office messages on your front door or on social media. In this regard, discretion is the key to a safe home.
