Schiller meets punk: The robbers inspire in Bad Hersfeld!

On June 27, 2025, the time had finally come: The Bad Hersfeld Festival celebrated the premiere of “The Robbers,” a production that not only reinterprets Friedrich Schiller's classic, but also provides a breath of fresh air by cleverly incorporating the rocking sounds of the Toten Hosen. Director Gil Mehmert has understood how to connect these two worlds and conjure up a thrilling spectacle on the stage of the monastery ruins that captivates the audience. Already at the performance, the audience shows their enthusiasm with standing ovations.

The production tells the story of the unlikely brothers Karl and Franz Moor, with the power struggle between the two highlighting central themes such as freedom and retribution. Through the intrigues of his brother Franz, Karl is appointed captain of a band of robbers. In the middle of this game, Karl and Amalia, who is in love with him, meet. But fate takes a tragic turn when Karl has to kill at Amalia's request in order to maintain the robbers' favor. This complex relationship is portrayed in a lively and authentic way, in contrast to the placid aristocratic side, which is also the subject of the piece.

Music meets drama

What makes the production special is the exciting integration of punk rock songs by the Toten Hosen. With an ensemble of talented actors, musical performers and a five-piece rock band, Schiller's emotional space is expanded through musical interludes. This idea is not new for Mehmert, who already has experience with similar productions such as “Cabaret” and “Hair” at this venue. Here too, the ruins are actively integrated into the events.

Thanks to the creative handwriting of stage designer Jens Kilian and costume designer Heike Meixner, the piece gains visual depth and authenticity. The selection of songs includes both well-known and lesser-known titles that accompany the narrative in a captivating way. The combination of Schiller's haunting text and the Toten Hosen's energetic music takes the theater experience to a new level and appeals to both lovers of classic literature and fans of modern rock music. This refreshing idea summarizes what many people value so much about the Bad Hersfeld Festival - the courage to combine tradition with innovation.
