Future visions for Fulda: CDU presents new city center plans!

What is driving change in Fulda? The CDU recently held its sixth and final ceremony in Fulda's city center, thereby setting the course for the future. The event started on August 25, 2023 at the Schlosstheater and ended at Pier36 am Aueweiher. Numerically, the inspection was a complete success, as more interested citizens were present than originally expected. Among the guests were Mayor Dr. Heiko Wingenfeld, Mayor Dag Wehner and state parliament member Thomas Hering as important voices for the city.

The focus of the inspection was on important topics such as the redesign of Jerusalemplatz, the purchase of the Karl department store and the gastronomy at the Aueweiher. The CDU has not only initiated active citizen participation, but has also experienced first-hand the population's interest in urban developments.

Cultural highlights and future-oriented projects

The first stop on the tour was the Schlosstheater, which is considered the cultural heart of the city center. Here Peter Scholz from Spotlight Musicals spoke about this year's summer of musicals, whose latest production “Robin Hood” attracted numerous visitors. Mayor Wingenfeld also emphasized the great commitment of the musical producers. The anticipation for the upcoming production “Der Schimmelreiter” is already noticeable, as 7,000 tickets have already been sold. One of citizens' concerns was to improve ticket regulations for people with disabilities to make access easier.

The second stop took the participants to Jerusalem Square. City planning officer Daniel Schreiner presented the plans for the redesign of the memorial to the Jewish community. The site is to be designed as a barrier-free memorial site and a quiet retreat. A central element will be the “letter fence”, which calls on people to pay respect to the history of the place with a message from Psalm 23.

Another highlight was the visit to the Karl department store, which is now owned by the city of Fulda. The plan is to develop a dental clinic on the top floor, as well as educational and cultural areas. When looking at the current exhibition on the creation of Hesse, the participants were able to get a foretaste of what it will be used for in the future. Also worth mentioning is the newly introduced Fulda children's offer, which is located in the department store and offers low-threshold education and leisure activities.

Conclusion at the Aueweiher – dialogue and enjoyment

The visit concluded with a social gathering at Pier36 to explore the restaurants at the Aueweiher. During a wonderful sunset, people talked shop together and there were lively conversations between citizens and politicians. These direct dialogues are crucial in taking into account citizens' wishes and ideas for preserving their city. The high level of interest signals that the people of Fulda want to continue to be actively involved in shaping their homeland.

For the CDU, the inspections were not only a city event, but also a valuable opportunity to capture the perspectives of citizens and incorporate them into future planning. Together, the course has been set for the future of Fulda - a process that will continue to strengthen the bond between politics and the population.
