Sandy Mölling inspires in The Pope: Premierezauber in Fulda!

Fulda, Deutschland - In Fulda there is a celebration mood! On May 13, 2025, the castle theater experienced the eagerly awaited premiere of the musical "The Pope". Leading actress Sandy Mölling took on the role of Johanna and conjured up her own note on the stage. The audience, including prominent guests such as the CDU member of the Bundestag Michael Brand and the parliamentary group leader Ines Claus, rewarded the performance with standing ovation and loud applause. The staging, reinterpreted by Gil Mehmert, was very well received and - after a successful premiere in the previous year - offered some fresh changes, including a new scene between Johanna and Gerold.

The premiere marks the start of the musical summer in Fulda, which will last until July 20, 2025. In addition to "The Pope", "Robin Hood" is also on the program, which will be shown from August 1st. Sandy Mölling, who has been involved in various musicals in her career since 2010, was in a good mood after the premiere, also because she knew a strong ensemble behind her, which was warmly praised by producer Peter Scholz. If you still want to secure remaining tickets for the musical, you should look at the branches of the Fuldaer Zeitung - and be careful: Mölling will not appear in Fulda on certain appointments, including June 20 and 21.

The action and the creative team

"The Pope" is based on Donna W. Cross's bestseller and tells the moving story of Johanna, who fights against social resistance as a woman, flees into the monastery and makes a career in Rome as a Pope. In addition to Sandy Mölling, Dennis Henschel also appear as Margrave Gerold, Christian Schöne as Anastasius and Yngve Gasoy-Romdal as Arsenius. The young version creators Rosa Mangold and Jana Band embody the child's main characters of Johanna and Johannes. The musical accompaniment by Dennis Martin promises a stirring mix of dramatic ballads and soulful love songs. The stage design comes from Christofer Bareca, a Tony Award winner, and contributes to the impressive overall experience.

Another nice custom at the house: A special liqueur is created for every musical premiere-for "Die Päptin" there is a new raspberry-Yuzu-Rosmarin liqueur. This not only offers a taste experience on stage, but also in the audience!

A look at diversity in the theater

for Fulda, a city with a rich baroque architecture and sights such as the cathedral and the city palace, the musical "Die Päptin" could play a significant role, also in the context of such important topics. With an offer that combines culture, enjoyment and equality, it remains to be seen how the number of spectators develops-also with regard to the upcoming musical hit "Robin Hood".

In any case, the interest is high: the utilization of the castle theater was already demonstrated at the premiere. Perhaps this also brings a breath of fresh air to the rejuvenated Fulda theater into the debate about gender justice and diversity in the field of art and culture.
