Sandy Mölling inspires in The Pope”: premiere magic in Fulda!

There is a celebration atmosphere in Fulda! On May 13, 2025, the Schlosstheater experienced the eagerly awaited premiere of the musical “The Pope”. Lead actress Sandy Mölling took on the role of Johanna and brought her own touch to the stage. The audience, including prominent guests such as CDU Bundestag member Michael Brand and parliamentary group leader Ines Claus, rewarded the performance with a standing ovation and loud applause. The production, reinterpreted by Gil Mehmert, was very well received and – after a successful premiere last year – offered some fresh changes, including a new scene between Johanna and Gerold.

The premiere marks the start of the summer of musicals in Fulda, which will last until July 20, 2025. In addition to “The Pope,” “Robin Hood” is also on the program, which will be shown from August 1st. Sandy Mölling, who has appeared in various musicals in her career since 2010, was in a good mood after the premiere, also because she had a strong ensemble behind her, which was warmly praised by producer Peter Scholz. If you still want to secure remaining tickets for the musical, you should visit the Fuldaer Zeitung's offices - and be careful: Mölling will not be appearing in Fulda on certain dates, including June 20th and 21st.

The plot and the creative team

“The Pope” is based on the bestseller by Donna W. Cross and tells the moving story of Johanna, who as a woman fights against social resistance, flees to the monastery and makes a career as pope in Rome. In addition to Sandy Mölling, Dennis Henschel also appears as Margrave Gerold, Christian Schöne as Anastasius and Yngve Gasoy-Romdal as Arsenius. The young version creators Rosa Mangold and Jana Band embody the childlike main characters Johanna and Johannes. The musical accompaniment by Dennis Martin promises a rousing mix of dramatic ballads and soulful love songs. The set design is by Christofer Barreca, a Tony Award winner, and contributes to the impressive overall experience.

Another nice tradition in the house: a special liqueur is created for every musical premiere - for “The Pope” there is a new raspberry-yuzu-rosemary liqueur. This means a taste experience is offered not only on stage, but also in the audience!

A look at diversity in theater

For Fulda, a city with rich baroque architecture and sights such as the cathedral and the city palace, the musical “The Pope” could play an important role, also in the context of such important topics. With an offer that combines culture, enjoyment and equality, it remains to be seen how audience numbers will develop - also with regard to the upcoming musical hit “Robin Hood”.

In any case, interest is high: the palace theater's capacity utilization was already proven at the premiere. Perhaps this will also bring a breath of fresh air to the rejuvenated Fulda Theater in the debate about gender equality and diversity in the field of art and culture.
