Crash course Witzenhausen: Young people in the fight against traffic accidents!

In Witzenhausen, the first “crash course” in the Werra-Meißner district took place today, November 18, 2025, in the auditorium of the vocational school. The event was aimed at young road users and was intended to provide realistic access to the tragic consequences of serious traffic accidents. The event was organized by a collaboration between the North Hesse Police Headquarters, the school management and Martin Tils from Traffic Prevention. It was a declared goal to make students aware of the risks in road traffic and to counteract the danger, especially for 18 to 24 year olds.

In his opening speech, Mayor Lukas Sittel emphasized the daily reality that the emergency services are confronted with. During the program, the young people received insights into real operational situations, which were conveyed through an impressive lecture by Martin Tils. Image and video materials were used to show the far-reaching consequences of traffic accidents in a tangible and vivid way.

Emotional intervention and practical workshops

The participants experienced a special moment during an intervention in which they wrote their dreams on pieces of paper. These pieces of paper were attached to balloons and then popped to symbolically illustrate the fragility of life. In the schoolyard, the young people had the opportunity to view emergency vehicles from the fire department, police, rescue services and funeral services - a clear and impressive opportunity.

The program also included a workshop phase with five modules in which the students examined various aspects of the traffic accident from different perspectives:

  • DRK: Reanimationstechniken
  • Notfallseelsorge: Begleitung in Krisensituationen
  • Bestattungswesen: Erklärung des letzten Schrittes
  • Suchtprävention: Rauschbrillen zur Demonstration von Beeinträchtigungen
  • Polizei: Statistische Befunde zur Gefährdung von 18- bis 24-Jährigen

The experiences and reports from police officers, firefighters and paramedics, who spoke about personal experiences and the emotions surrounding traffic accidents, were perceived as very touching by the participants. “It showed us how dangerous risky behavior in traffic really is,” reported a student named Martin Berndt and expressed positive feedback on the event overall.

A call to mindfulness

Finally, Chief Police Commissioner Andrea Roselieb made an urgent appeal to young people to be more careful in traffic. The teacher and co-organizer of the project stated that it was important to bring it back to school in order to reach even more students. As the platform for the prevention program “Crash Kurs NRW” emphasizes, traffic accidents are often the result of disregarding the rules, which in turn can be avoided.

The “crash course” in Witzenhausen not only created awareness of the risks in road traffic, but also touched people emotionally and stimulated thought. Events like this are important to emphasize the responsibility of road users and to make it clear to young people that their behavior on the road can make a difference. With this in mind, the organizers hope that it will be repeated and that it will have a lasting impact on the students, who will certainly become more committed to their own safety as a result of what they have experienced today.
