Sensational finds at Nikolaiplatz: 400 skeletons from the Middle Ages!

Something exciting is happening in Eschwege! Archaeological rescue excavations are currently taking place on Nikolaiplatz, which are of great importance not only for the city but also for the region. The foundations of the Gothic St. Godehard or St. Nicholas Church are now visible again after being hidden for almost 500 years. But that's not all - numerous children's burials were discovered around the choir of the Gothic church.

There are also surprising indications of a previously unknown Romanesque church from the 12th century. The skeletons of this older church were also recovered. It remains to be hoped that the foundations of this Romanesque church will be preserved, despite the tragic loss that the last remains of the Gothic church were irretrievably destroyed by excavation work.

Nikolaiplatz is being redesigned

The planned redesign of Nikolaiplatz includes staircases, a fountain, trees and a cistern, which should be completed by 2026 at the latest.
