In a period of just a few hours, two gray Audi vehicles equipped with the popular but vulnerable Keyless Go technology were stolen. According to information from nh24.de, an Audi Q7 with the official license plate MZ-R 753 was stolen from Elbinger Straße and an Audi Q5 with the license plate MEG-PL 801 from Heideweg. The crime occurred between 10 p.m. and 3:55 a.m. and was not the first of its kind in the region.
There have been similar incidents in the Schwalm-Eder district in the last few days, as reported by HNA. In addition to the completed thefts, the police also recorded two attempted thefts. Particularly alarming: The police warn of professional car thieves who specifically attack vehicles with keyless go systems and suspect that these gangs often receive orders from abroad.
Thieves' technique
The perpetrators' approach is fascinating and frightening at the same time. Using relatively simple technology, they can extend the radio signal of the vehicle key without leaving any traces. All you need is a range extender, which is available for around 100 euros. This allows the vehicle to be opened even if the key is in the house or in the owner's pocket. This is done by placing two devices near the key and the vehicle, as Auto Motor Sport explains.
Police and experts urge car owners to exercise caution. In many cases, older models that have weaker security technology are preferred. It is therefore advisable to park your vehicle in well-lit places or in closed garages. Valuables should never be left in the car to avoid further encouraging thieves.
