MT Melsungen celebrates legendary 20 years of home wins against Düsseldorf!
The year is 2025 and a very special anniversary is on the agenda: The handball club MT Melsungen is celebrating 20 years of the impressive home win against HSG Düsseldorf. The history of MT is characterized by extraordinary moments and a remarkable rise in German handball sport. Until the summer of 2005, the Melsung city sports hall was the club's home, where legendary second division derbies against HSG Gensungen/Felsberg were played. Over 1,000 spectators streamed into the halls, some in rows of three – real enthusiasm for handball!
The first qualification for the Final Four in the DHB Cup took place in Hamburg in 1996 and laid the foundation for the successes of the coming years. After promotion to the first Bundesliga, the city sports hall was no longer a venue, but cup games continued to be played in Melsungen until 2014. The Rotenburg Meirotels-Halle quickly became the new home, where the first win against HSV Hamburg was celebrated.
From Melsungen to Kassel
In 2007 the idea of moving to Kassel came up. Under the leadership of Robert Hedin and other responsible persons, a suitable site was found. The opening in the Rothenbach Hall was a big step with 4300 spectators, despite a defeat against THW Kiel. Since then, the MT has been active at the Kassel exhibition center for 18 years, where a new grandstand has increased the capacity to 4,500 spectators. The undefeated premiere in the Nordhessen-Arena against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen in front of 5,100 spectators is another highlight in the club's history.
Regular indoor games are planned for the coming season from 2027. This continuity not only ensures stable conditions in the club, but also promises exciting duels for handball fans in the region.
A look at the sport of handball
Handball itself has a long and eventful history. In 1906, the Dane Holger Nielsen published the first set of rules, and in 1917 the game, then known as goalball, was renamed handball. The first German field handball championships took place in 1921. Since then, the sport has developed inexorably and recently experienced a renaissance of indoor handball.
A modern highlight for handball fans is the offer in the fan shops, where products such as the “MT Erilette” in black with FULLE POWER lettering are available, ideal after sport in the sauna or swimming pool area. At a price of 19.90 euros, this is a stylish way to show your loyalty to the club. At the same time, the sports store is well positioned with a stock of nine items plus different product variants - good business for the fans!
In the future, interest in handball will remain high due to the constant success and close ties to the region. And while MT Melsungen plays in Kassel, we look forward to the next 20 years.
