Kassel is playing! City museum connects generations in new exhibition

The city museum in Kassel is showing a captivating special exhibition entitled "Children's stuff for everyone! How playing connects us" that explores the topic of play in a creative way. Today, November 7, 2025, the event opened with a press tour with the participation of Kassel's mayor Sven Schoeller (Greens). The mayor was guided by fond memories of his grandparents' Skat game, with which he learned to play himself. hessenschau.de reports that the exhibition presents an impressive variety of games - from board games to construction sets to modern video games.

What is particularly exciting is that the city museum called on people in the region to submit their own favorite games and personal stories in the spring. The response was overwhelming: Curator Rabea Otto is pleased about 89 submitted exhibits that reflect the diversity and different perspectives of the participants. “Playing brings people together,” is how she describes the intention of the exhibition, which not only tells stories but also brings different generations together.

A digital journey through time

Not only classic games are honored, but also digital ones. A particularly creative exhibit is the video game “Sims 4”, which was used to recreate Kassel's old town, which was destroyed in the Second World War. In this way, history can be experienced in a playful way and shows how games can also serve as a platform for conveying memories. Mayor Schoeller emphasizes the social importance of play and emphasizes that it plays a crucial role in character development.

Varied and long-lasting

The exhibition is open until September next year and invites visitors to rediscover the multifaceted world of gaming. In times when digital and traditional gaming are often viewed in separate categories, the presentation creates a bridge between the different types of gaming. It seems only logical that the word “play” has its roots in the Middle High German “spil(e)n”, which points to the deep-rooted tradition of playing in our culture. Wiktionary explains that “playing” focuses on both activities such as “playing cards” and engaging in entertainment.

With this exhibition, the Kassel City Museum proves that the world of gaming is anything but a dusty affair and shows once again how important and unifying gaming is for all of us.
