New landfill project in Hofgeismar: Forest areas threatened for expansion!
Major renovations will soon take place in Hofgeismar: comprehensive construction work is scheduled to begin at the landfill from autumn 2025. Uwe Pietsch, the head of the district waste disposal, has presented plans that not only affect the earthworks on the site, but also provide for a large expansion of the landfill. The plan is to expand to 9,000 square meters of urban forest in a southwesterly direction, like that HNA reported.
The signaling development plan has already been approved by the city council. From July 7th, citizens and associations will have the opportunity to submit their statements in the town hall. In addition to expanding the area, the old cradle house at the entrance will be demolished because its foundations no longer meet safety requirements. The new weighing building will be constructed near the truck parking area, while one of the two scales will be relocated to improve practical operations.
Modern innovations and sustainable measures
The renovation work includes not only functional renovations, but also environmentally friendly solutions. The new office complex, which is being built on the site of the former reception building, will also contribute to the creation of new jobs. All new buildings are heated by a heat pump, which replaces the previous oil heating system. In addition, the fleet is to be expanded to include an electrically powered garbage truck, although the transition to electric vehicles will take a total of around 15 years.
A particularly exciting project is the planned expansion of the existing photovoltaic system with a new 5 megawatt system. A larger transformer station is required to support this additional facility. With all of these measures aimed at sustainable waste recycling, the landfill is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to the Climate protection municipality Modern landfills help prevent millions of tons of the greenhouse gas methane.
Forest clearance and compensatory measures
Against the background of the clearing of 9,000 square meters of forest, compensatory measures are also planned. The landfill is planning to carry out corresponding plantings in the Sababurg Zoo. These measures are part of the legal requirements, as the Landfill Ordinance regulates the construction, operation, decommissioning and aftercare of landfills. According to the Circular Economy Act, landfills are still important for the disposal of heavily contaminated waste, even if they are considered the worst type of waste treatment.
With a total investment of around one million euros, the entire conversion of the landfill will take around three years. During the planning, care is taken to ensure that the redesign of the entrance area improves traffic flow in order to avoid traffic jams and problems.
Overall, the landfill in Hofgeismar seems to be on a promising path to working more sustainably and efficiently. The implementation of these ambitious projects strengthens waste disposal in the Kassel district and also brings ecological benefits for the region.
