Danger of collapse: Is the Holzape Viaduct at risk of final demise?
In Wülmersen, the bridge over the Holzape is badly damaged and faces major challenges. Loud HNA The condition of the bridge poses a risk to life due to root ingrowth, erosion and fallen stones. This means that one of the pillars is not on solid ground and the listed bridge is classified as at risk of collapse. An alternative diversion for the popular Diemel cycle path is urgently needed.
The diversion leads over a steep, unpaved forest floor, which can be particularly challenging for cyclists with heavy luggage. Helpful cyclists support each other to overcome this steep path. Despite the difficulties, the nearby Café Mehlschwalbe has fortunately not seen a decline in customer numbers.
Uncertain future for the Holzape Bridge
The mayor of Trendelburg, Manuel Zeich, is working on improvements, but there are currently no concrete diversion plans. Due to the desolate condition of the bridge, Hessen Forest is planning its demolition and is submitting an application for imminent danger. Monument protection must be taken into account, as it is one of the oldest railway bridges in Hesse. The Hessian State Office for Monument Preservation is in contact with Hessen Forst about this.
The bridge, built in the 1840s, is in focus because it is unclear what will happen next with it and the Diemel cycle path. The diversion is currently viewed as uncomplicated, but is not seen as a permanent solution. The Kassel district is evaluating various options for restoring traffic. Incidentally, the Diemel cycle path is an ADFC quality route with five stars, and the reclassification process for 2026 is ongoing, without the diversion having a negative impact on the rating.
Closing the gap for the Diemel cycle path
Thanks to a total investment of around 1.2 million euros, 75 percent of which is funded by the “City and Country” program, a new pedestrian and cycle path connection was created along district road 91. Planning for this project began in late 2022 and the opening to traffic is imminent. The first district councilor Karl-Friedrich Frese emphasizes the precision in the execution and highlights the advantages of the new constructions. The aluminum bridges, which are not only light but also offer a long service life and corrosion resistance, come from a company on Lake Constance.
For cyclists in the region, the Diemel cycle path is one of the best routes in Germany and has been one of the most popular paths for many years. With the new connection and the constant expansion of the cycle path network, the region shows that it has a good knack for promoting cycling.
