Himmelsglobus when traveling: Kasseler masterpiece leaves Brake Castle!
Himmelsglobus when traveling: Kasseler masterpiece leaves Brake Castle!
What an exciting day in the Weseraissance Museum Schloss Brake! Restorer Michael Beck from Kassel was on site today and got the impressive sky globe from the showcase to prepare it for the return transport. The current special exhibition “Everything except earthly. Sertion of astronomy” has attracted over 8,000 visitors and is now being extended until June 22nd. Another highlight: two sky globes and a proportional circle were returned to the lender Hessen Kassel Heritage, which means that top -class exhibits leave the place here to be estimated elsewhere.
Thomas Senke, technician in the museum, offered his help in packaging and transporting the loans. The works of art should of course be treated with great care. Climateists were placed in the exhibition room before the return transport. These are designed to compensate for the indoor and outside temperature and the humidity before packaging. This ensures that the sensitive objects survive the transport unscathed.
Caution is the mother of the porcelain tan
Beck did not take any risk and put on black gloves to carefully remove the globe of the sky. Finally, it dates from the 16th century and must be checked for damage. Filigree parts were protected with tissue paper so that they did not get any scratches on the trip. After a thorough inspection, the sky globe was safely stowed in the climate list, professionally closed and recorded every detail.
alchemy and magic
While Brake is all about astronomy and its fascinating exhibits, it is also worth looking back at the special exhibition “Alchemy - Magic or Science?”, Which took place in 2022. This explained the search for the mystical “Stone of the Wise” and the role of the alchemists in an entertaining way. From paintings to sculptures to real Böttger-Porzellan and Rubinglas with a gold content, everything that made the heart of science friends beat faster.
Of course, historical connections to alchemists in Lippe and at Brake Castle were also a central topic. Count Simon VI, who was enthusiastic about the topic, even actively took part in the establishment of an alchemist laboratory. Historian Georg Heil searched archives and researched the life stories of Lippe alchemists, which gave the exhibition an incomparable historical value.
There were also great hands-on programs for the younger visitors, such as the “witch-backing” for kindergartens or “goldfalls for beginners!” For students from the 5th grade. This was not only fun, but also aroused interest in the exciting world of science.
