Laid the foundation for small giant house at the Kassel Clinic!

On Monday, June 16, 2025, an important step was celebrated in Kassel to improve the care of serious and chronically ill children and their families: the laying of the foundation stone for the "small giant house" at the Kassel Clinic. Around 60 guests, including Hesse's Family and Health Minister Diana Stolz and Kassel's mayor and health director Nicole Maisch, were involved in this solemn event. A comprehensive care competence for affected families is planned in this new center.

"The Little Giant House" should be a starting point for families that are prepared for a life with illness. It offers everyday support from professional nursing guidance and psychosocial support to help families increase their security in the home. "We want to stand by parents and children in difficult phases of life," said proudly.

facility and offers

The planned premises include eight apartments with garden on the ground floor, which can be used for stays of two to twelve weeks. Office and seminar rooms for the team of the "Little Giant Northern Hesse" are housed on the upper floor, which will take care of medical, nursing and psychosocial support. The sponsorship is the responsibility of the outpatient children's palliative team in North Hesse, which works together with other facilities on seamless care and support for the affected children.

With the establishment of the "small giant house", the specialized outpatient palliative care (SAPV) is also strengthened for children and young people. This is often prescribed by resident pediatricians or clinics when it comes to ensuring care at home. "We are entitled to take care of the individual needs of the little patients: to cut inside and their families," explains a representative of the team.

support for families

The support not only includes basic medical care, but also close cooperation with children's clinics, outpatient care and hospice services. These services take on tasks that may not be cared for by others, and relieve the families through regular visits and discussions. The goal is to build an individual supply network in which the ideas and wishes of the families are in the foreground.

particularly emphasized is the possibility of 24-hour calling by specialists who can offer both telephone and personal contact. In addition to medical care, psychosocial support and measures to relieve pain are also part of the offer. Due to the close cooperation with social pediatric centers, other resources and specialists are also available that can be supported by families in difficult times.

As the Björn Schulz Foundation informs, it is important that relatives and specialists are well informed and know support options. For this purpose, numerous materials are made available that not only include registration sheets, but also information on palliative care measures that are necessary for smooth and sensitive accompaniment.

With the "small giant house", a significant step in Kassel is taken in the direction of a better quality of life for seriously ill children and their families. The Ergo and therapy rooms, which are also to be created, support the families in mastering their everyday life and always ensuring the best possible support. A real sign of hope for many who rely on these valuable offers.
