Cemetery thieves strike in Baunatal: 15,000 euros in damage!

What's going on in Baunatal? On the night of Thursday to Friday there was a serious theft at the cemetery in Rengershausen, where unknown perpetrators stole statues and bowls worth around 15,000 euros from a total of 21 graves in a brazen act. The total damage, including damage to the graves, is estimated at around 50,000 euros FFH reports.

The police became aware of the incident after an alert woman reported the thefts to the relevant department on Friday morning. She had discovered that a bronze bowl had been stolen from her late husband's grave. When filing the complaint, investigators discovered 20 additional damaged graves. The perpetrators presumably used a lever tool to forcibly steal the items, according to information from the police, who are investigating particularly serious theft, disturbing the peace of the dead and damage to property.

On the trail of the perpetrators

But the story takes an interesting turn: some of the stolen items have already been found. A police patrol discovered a blue VW Golf 4 on Bleichenweg in Kassel that had a mysterious connection to the crimes. However, the Göttingen license plates attached to the vehicle were unstamped and did not belong to this car. The rightful owner of the vehicle is unknown - it may even be a stolen car. The VW Golf was seized.

Eyewitnesses reported that three people got out of the car and quickly left the scene. Now all that's missing is the support of the public: The police are asking any witnesses who can provide information about the perpetrators or the blue VW Golf 4 to call 0561-9100. The time of the crime is limited to the period between Thursday evening, 6:00 p.m. and Friday, 12:30 a.m Press portal informed.

Fight against crime

Such incidents are part of a larger problem affecting society. Around 5.63 million crimes were recorded in Germany in 2022, with thefts making up a significant proportion. The figures show a worrying increase in theft crimes, the first time since 2015. In 2022 alone, 1.78 million thefts were recorded by the police, including many shoplifting and bicycle thefts. Theft remains a widespread criminal challenge, as Statista explains.
