Sidewalk parking in Hesse: How cities are finally acting uniformly!
What is happening in Hesse? Here's some news about sidewalk parking. A current survey by German Environmental Aid (DUH) shows that the cities in our state deal with the issue differently. These differences are not only notable, but also concern pedestrian safety and accessibility, particularly for people with disabilities and parents with strollers.
In Darmstadt, parking vehicles on sidewalks up to a width of 1.20 meters is tolerated. However, it is criticized that this practice particularly affects wheelchair users, walkers and strollers. Finally, one should not forget that a minimum width of 1.60 meters was required to ensure the necessary safety. In Frankfurt, on the other hand, the city administration takes decisive action against sidewalk parking, but tolerates it in certain residential areas - but only to avoid more dangerous parking.
Different regulations in the cities
In Offenbach, parking on sidewalks is only punishable if the remaining width is 1.50 meters, unless there are exceptional obstructions. In Kassel, however, there is generally no tolerance, although old regulations may allow a width of 1.50 meters. Last but not least, the cities of Wiesbaden and Hanau are guided by legal requirements and do not tolerate sidewalk parking.
These different regulations raise questions. What about pedestrian safety? Isn't it time to set uniform standards? The debate about sidewalk parking shows how important it is to include everyone affected in the discussion. This is the only way to ensure that the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and drivers are taken into account equally.
The challenge remains to find the balance between parking options and pedestrian safety. There’s something to be said – the cities have to act!
