Midwives strengthen emergency services: More safety during births in the Schwalm-Eder district!

There is now reason to be happy in the Schwalm-Eder district: 14 midwives will now be available to assist the emergency services to support births outside of clinics. This not only brings a breath of fresh air to maternity care, but is also intended to make a valuable contribution to protecting mothers and newborns. Because contractions often begin before you can make it to the hospital. The newly implemented model “Midwives in the emergency service” aims to provide a remedy here, as HNA reports.

This initiative makes the Schwalm-Eder district the only district in northern Hesse to have introduced this model. By supporting midwives, a gap in care is closed in rural areas, where maternity wards are increasingly disappearing into hospitals. In fact, the midwives come to work around twice a month when it is called “initial labor”;

Together for more security

The concept has already enjoyed great success in other regions such as the Main-Kinzig district and is now being further expanded in Hesse. District Administrator Winfried Becker emphasizes how important cooperation between midwives, emergency services and the district is for additional safety. As highlighted in the NH24 report, the midwives in the district have a high level of professional competence and are trusted caregivers for expectant mothers.

In the event of an emergency, the control center alerts the midwives directly via the “HessenAlarm” system on their mobile phones, regardless of whether an emergency doctor is required or not. The nearest available midwife will take over the call and, if necessary, can be called in if the emergency services personnel are already on site. The ambulances are also equipped with a special birth kit that contains all the necessary utensils.

Outlook for the future

This initiative is particularly important for the rural areas of the Schwalm-Eder district, where it is often difficult to ensure rapid medical care. Statistically speaking, missions with the keyword “onset of labor” occur about twice a month. This enables expectant mothers to receive qualified care, especially in unexpected situations, and also increases safety for mother and child.

All interested midwives who would like to become part of this valuable project can contact Uwe Wunsch from the district: He can be reached on 05681/7753702 or by email at uwe.wunsch@schwalm-eder-kreis.de. With this step, the Schwalm-Eder-Kreis is making significant progress in birth care and ensuring that expectant parents receive the best possible support in a carefree situation.
